Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Higher Call to be better than the print version?

    Yes, by far!

Who was your favorite character and why?

    All were excellent!

Have you listened to any of Robertson Dean’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The wrap up at the end!

    Any additional comments?

This is a must read due to the factual nature of the book and the best way to learn the History of the Germans and U.S. in the World War II. I got this book to share with husband on a long RV trip. I figured it would be more for him to enjoy. I really got into it as well. Since he knows history better than me I could rely on him to help fill in the questions I had. We were both glad to get back on the road to listen some more! I will look for more stories like this as well as more from the author and reader. Thanks for making history come alive this way!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

    Very Top!

What did you like best about this story?

The truth of the story, and excellent writing

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I learned so much about the Pacific WW ll story that I am amazed this has not been more highly spoken of! Where was I in History class? Was it even covered? I'm not a history fan but this is an eye opening factual story! Like I said, all should be reading this book from teenagers to late adults.

Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

Anthony Spencer is egotistical, proud of being a self-made business success at the peak of his game, even though the cost of winning was painfully high. A cerebral hemorrhage leaves Tony comatose in a hospital ICU. He 'awakens' to find himself in a surreal world, a 'living' landscape that mirrors dimensions of his earthly life, from the beautiful to the corrupt.

After a sad and neglected childhood as an orphan, Jane Eyre was hired by Edward Rochester as governess for his ward. Jane was pleased with the quiet country life at Thornfield, with the beautiful old manor house and gardens, with the book-filled library, and with her own comfortable room. But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor.

Where does Jane Eyre [Brilliance Edition] rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was a good experience with a long classic piece of literature.

What did you like best about this story?

Character development of both good and bad in the whole story.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

    Jane of course!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No way could I listen in one sitting. It took days to get through.

    Any additional comments?

I'm glad I got into it. I found that I wanted to write emails in "old English" when I was done listening. Fun to hear the language as well as the readers French when needed within the body of the story and characters. "They quitted the room".... at least I understood what she meant. Fun to enter a different time and place, but oh such a tale she told!
