Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. Oscar dreams of becoming the Dominican J. R. R. Tolkien and, most of all, of finding love. But he may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fuku: the curse that has haunted Oscar's family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still waiting for his first kiss, is just its most recent victim.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The culture, material, settings could not have been more out of my realm of experience and understanding, but the style of writing is so raw and feels so honest I felt drawn in by a sense of intimacy and within a few pages the characters were "my family" and I felt completely invested in their stories.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

EL James take note, you've got the eroticism down- but Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series elevates the eroticism by embedding it into a remarkable story with delicious awe inspiring characters that the reader can engage with and care about. She includes fascinating historical elements, and depicts the entire range of human capacity and emotion, while adeptly weaving in pathos and a sparkling humor. After reading 50 shades I just wanted to wash the filth off, after reading The Outlander I wanted to fly right back to Inverness and revel in the beauty of the Highlands and the Highlanders and then to find DG and give her a big hug for the many hours of pure listening pleasure that she has gifted me. And a note to Davina Porter, WOW, top narration honors to you.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

I found this to be a beautiful story, poignant and instructive. I very much liked the interweavings of such disparate characters. The historical, religious, and architectural fabric of this novel were perfectly balanced. The narration was strong and prosodic. An excellent story, that I will not likely forget.
