  • Aftershock: The Next Economy and America’s Future

The author of 12 acclaimed books, Robert B. Reich is a Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, and has served in three national administrations. While many blamed Wall Street for the financial meltdown, Aftershock points a finger at a national economy in which wealth is increasingly concentrated at the top - and where a grasping middle class simply does not have the resources to remain viable.

Chris says: "Very plausible assessment of our economy"
"Completely one sided with straw man arguments....."
    Overall

THIS BOOK IS PROPAGANDA TO THE CORE... If you are looking for a propaganda piece that sounds like it was written by the Federal Reserve itself then buy this book...

If you want the TRUTH about our financial mess then buy books like Meltdown, or any books by Ron Paul or Peter Schiff...

To give an example of how far out of wack this guy is- this guy gives the federal reserve credit for 'guiding us for 14 years' into prosperity.. This genius author should have checked how the Federal Reserve was actually created in secret on Jekyll Island. Then he should check into how quickly the severe 1921 depression (that noone hears about) was over very quickly because the government did nothing and let the free market correct itself...

But this ignorant author wants to act as though the reason we go into eventual financial prosperity following the great depression was because the Federal Reserve was given more power??? Oh my... This author is ignorant at best..

The author sets up straw man oposition claims that are half truths at best and knocks the straw man down to give the apearance of winning the argument... Thomas E Woods, Ron Paul, or Peter Schif could chew this author up and spit him out while they are sleep talking...

If you want proof just look into the past... in 2005-2006 while everyone was saying everything was great and there is not going to be any kind of collapse, the deseneters from that opinion were who? Thomas E Woods, Ron Paul, and Peter Schiff.... Now that the collapse has happened, morons like this author want to jump up and say he knows what the problem is.... I dare you to look into what this author had to say before this collapse... If you look into what he was saying before the collapse I seriously doubt you will buy this book.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

What disappointed you about One Second After?

Bottom line- This book is painted with too many Unrealistic Macho Hollywood type scenes... Patriots by Rawles or Lights Out by Crawford will teach you far more skill and tactics, and they are far more realistic.

One Second After was ok sometimes, I didn't care for the main character who was painted as some kind of Billy Bob Bad Butt- his tactics were horrible-Such as a time when he walked through the front door onto the front porch with a big pistol when people just drove up and shot the front door with a shotgun.... The book made this sound like the right decision because 'he had been in enough Civil War re-enactments'? Two words - Fatal Funnel.

However in this Hollywood Book--This ignorant tactic actually worked... He walked right on to the front porch, they did not instantly drop him when he wasl through the fatal funnel the shotgun... He fired his massive macho pistol, and said some macho words and they decided to get back into their car and leave... If this is not an ignorant Hollywood Tactic, then please tell me what is... If this tactic was any worse the name of the book would be called 'Desperado'.

There are other Hollywood scenes like in a city meeting the Sheriff told him he needed the main Character's car..... The Main Character told the Sheriff to use a bicycle... When the Sheriff again says he needs the car, The Main Character dares the Sheriff to "just try" to take his car. It doesn't even mention that this bad boy was armed at the time...

I'm not saying I agree with the Sheriff taking the vehicle, however the Sheriff cannot transport criminals, wounded, or sick people on a bike, and a bike is far to slow for emergency response.... But this is hollywood and none of that is mentioned... The Bad Butt just wanted to act macho, and make an excuse for why he could not donate his car when it sounds like everyone else in town donated theirs...

Also- to think this bad butt could resist the entire Sheriffs Department while he is unarmed in the middle of a town meeting is the epitomy of unrealistic macho arrogance.

Again- I am not justifying government confiscating whatever they need, but in this case- there was a need, it sounds like everyone else in the comunity donated their working vehicle, and even if this weren't the case-- Jackie Chan taking out 7 guys at once is just TV... If this guy thinks he can fight an entire Sheriff's Dept, in the middle of a City Meeting then he is just an idiot (or a Hollywood Writer)...

There are other issues as well- If you actually want to learn skills, have a realistic storyline, and you don't need hollywood b.s. Read- "Patriots" by Rawles or "Lights Out" by Crawford:)

Aside from this, the Narator's male voice is ok.... But the narrator's female voice is very annoying to me...

America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse in the near future. The stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city.

What made the experience of listening to Patriots the most enjoyable?

JWR gives some worst case scenarios and weaves in some instructions on possible solutions.

    Any additional comments?

Author is incredibly intelligent the book overall is very instructive.

The only complaint I have is- there is some instruction/storyline I wish were not given in the book. Criminal minded people read this book too. There is a particular storyline in the book that I think is far more likely to be wrongfully paralleled in the mind or a criminal minded person. I disdain this part or an otherwise great book from giving this potential instruction/ mental comfort to a potential criminal (or current criminal) who will try to mentally parallel this story with his own life. (I have experience with people of this mindset)

Overall though this is one of my favorite novels ever. I have heard preppers say things are not going to be that way in the collapse, etc, etc.... I certainly do not think things will go exactly as this storyline either, however noone really knows how bad things will get.. The author is taking a collapse scenario with multiple compounding WORST case scenarios and giving some instructions for them.... The way I look at it-- If only one of those scenarios happens then you have instructions for that one scenario

I'm torn on how to rate this book... The author is very intelligent, and the book is well thought out.. But to most people this book is not practical.

I think this book will only benefit the maybe .01% of people that might actually practice wilderness survival EXTREMELY hard core before the fact... 99.9% of the people who read this book WILL NOT be able to strap on a backpack and live off the land for months or years. (which is basically what this book is about).. Not only that,, most people that think they are going to survive like that will become part of the problem NOT part of the solution. Once the fantasy collapses temptation to try and take from others will be real....

Fantasyland Macgyver watching types that think they can watch re-runs 16 hours a day and then grab a knife and survive will love this book...
The ability to survive with one backback for months at a time with no resupply goes way beyond almost everyone's realistic abilities. I know right now there are lots of guys pissed off saying "yes I can" but let me ask those Kit Carson types- when is the last time you went out into the woods and survived off the land for 3 months with NO resupply? ..... If you are one of the .01% that has actually done this then my hats off to you... However to the overwhelming majority, this book will only fuel a completely unrealistic fantasy about putting on a coonskin cap and playing Daniel Boone..... If you want to prepare for real buy James Wesley Rawles book NOT this one..

Lots of Joe Sixpacks will try to bugout to a nearby National Forest to live off the land... The vast majority will become a problem when fantastyland and reality collide.... Don't be one of them... Prepare now to help yourself, your family, and those desperate people that will need your help.

With all that said, My hats off to the Author Scott Williams, I think Scott can actually pull off what he speaks of... however I think that vast majority of his readers never will...

We are at a crossroads of immense proportions. Nationally, internationally, and globally, we areliving in a manner that is absolutely, unconditionally, irrevocably unsustainable. Our global economic stability is in jeopardy, our planet’s ecosystems are under attack, and our health is deteriorating. Huge changes are coming whether or not we want them, whether or not we are ready for them. How can we lead the charge to introduce innovations and solutions to meet the inevitable challenges of new kinds of economic forces?

Jose Salas says: "Not what I expected."
"This is all New World Order propaganda, Seriously"
    Overall

I could not believe this book. He starts out with very good observations and then goes completely off the deep end. He goes on and on the need for a New World Order... I feel dirty for having bought this book and by buying the book, having supported this crazy lunatic. If the New World Order ever needs a spokesperson or propaganda material I think they will head straight to this author.... DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!
