Now that the Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. team has defeated the nefarious Spellworks, the only "competition" in town, Katie Chandler doesn't have much to do as director of marketing, and she's starting to question her role at MSI. Her boyfriend Owen Palmer, on the other hand, is in hog heaven, translating an ancient and powerful magical manuscript. But then he finds that the cryptic text describing the location of an enchanted gem known as the Eye of the Moon has radically changed. This deadly stone gives its holder enhanced power over others and a craving for more power.

    Story

I have enjoyed most of Shanna Swendson's books and this book started out promising then turned into a 7 hour chase scene. Literally. Both Owen and Katie are now Magical Immunes. It begins with a cute scene with Owen absorbed in his studies and Katie trying to surprise him and break his obsessive study of old magic. But then a powerful magical stone is stolen, Katie and Owen are the only people that can be trusted with it since it has no power over them and they literally run from people for the entire book. Katie's Granny fighting on their side was entertaining for about 30 min and even that got old. I'm almost as obsessive as Owen so I had to finish the book, but I was never so glad to be done. Read the first couple of chapters and the last chapter and you won't have missed anything. And I'm sorry, but the ending with Mimi was ridiculous. She was obsessed with the stone, knew the fake was a fake, but at the end she just walks away with the fake without an argument? I've given all of Shanna's others a 4 or 5, but this one just hurt. Shanna writes too well to rate a 1 or 2, but a 3 was the best I could give the story.

When Laird Taran Ferguson's nephews refuse to wed and secure his birthright, he takes matters into his own hands, raiding a ball and kidnapping four likely brides - a bonny lass, an heiress with a slight reputation problem, a rich English beauty, and a maiden without a name or a fortune. But which one is ready to fall in love with the Scottish lord?

Would you try another book from the authors and/or Susan Duerden?

I would read another Julia Quinn in a heartbeat, but it was easy to determine which characters were hers and which were not. Julia is witty, funny and her characters are real and likeable. I was hoping the other two authors would be the same (I need some new reads!) But the other two spent more time ruminating inside their own thoughts than having the characters interact and I personally don't want so much inner dialogue.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot was fun -4 ladies kidnapped by a Highland Laird anxious to see his nephews married and he accidentally kidnapped a Duke in the process. The Duke and Catriona were my favorite couple -fun, witty banter and the kind of match you want to see!

What does Susan Duerden bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought she did an excellent job with the number of voices she had to keep up with -4 ladies, a Scottish laird and 3 English Gentleman. I never had to guess who was talking and her voice was easy to listen to.

Did The Lady Most Willing... inspire you to do anything?

Re-Read/ Listen to some of my old Julia Quinn favorites -"What Happens in London," "The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever," "Ten Things I Love About You," and "It's in His Kiss."

Read the book then bought the audio version to listen to in the car! Chelsea is a burned out personal assistant to the stars who was trying to make it into the movies as an actress. She's smart, sarcastic and figures she can put up with anyone for three months to earn a $10,000 bonus. Mark Bressler, ex-captain of the Chinooks, was in a horrible accident putting him in the hospital for months and ruining his hockey career. The year they are certain to win the Stanley Cup. Every healthcare worker they have sent to his house has left within hours. He's bitter, in pain, but not helpless (as he keeps reminding everyone) and knows the one thing he loves most is gone so why bother being nice? But Chelsea won't take no for an answer and works her way into his life and his heart. Until he finds out she was offered $10,000 to make it work. With her, he's happier than he's ever been and seeing possibilities he had ruled out, but was she in it for the money or for him? Some of your other favorite characters from past books make appearances as well -Ty Savage & Faith Duffy, John Kowalsky, Luc Martineau and of course Sam LeClaire and Vlad, the impaler. It's a great, funny, quick-moving story about love and sticking it out through the hard times. Come on Rachel -I need my fix! More hockey stories!

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead.

    Story

I usually hate vampire/ paranormal books, but this was funny, sexy and witty! Jane gets fired from her job as a librarian, a job she loves and spills her troubles to a man she's never met as she drinks away her sorrows at a local pub. The good thing is, Jane is not a whiner, but has a quick wit and sarcastic humor and the man is intrigued. But he doesn't invite her home and she's bummed. Then her car quits on the way home, she falls into a muddy ditch, gets mistaken for a deer by a drunk hunter and is shot. Days don't get much worse. Luckily, her stranger found her and asks, "Do you want to die?" Jane says no and thus begins her days as part of the newly undead. There's a gift basket from the local "Undead Welcoming Committee" complete with handbook, the special foods section at Walmart where she can buy her synthetic blood all night and a whole new life she had never imagined. And of course, the man who saved her, Gabriel, who is smokin' hot and wants her. Her best friend, Zeb, who almost becomes her first meal (and no vampires do not kill humans -they only take what they need, but Zeb doesn't know that yet) joins a friends and family of vampires support group where he meets a wonderful werewolf. Then there is her dead aunt whom she can now see and talk to, her pushy mom, selfish sister and a vampire horn dog that won't leave her alone. The story is funny and the characters are great! Love Molly Harper's sharp sense of humor!

Lacey Terwilliger's shock and humiliation over her husband's philandering prompt her to add some bonus material to Mike's company newsletter: stunning Technicolor descriptions of the special brand of "administrative support" his receptionist gives him. The detailed mass e-mail to Mike's family, friends, and clients blows up in her face, and before one can say "instant urban legend", Lacey has become the pariah of her small Kentucky town and a media punch line....

    Story

Molly Harper uses great wit, sarcasm and one liners to deal with a difficult situation -finding out after everyone else in town already knows that your husband has been having an affair while you've given up your life to be the wife he expects.

But she doesn't do it in a sad, self-pitying way -she goes for him publicly using her entertaining wit through the newsletter he has her write to his clients each month. And in a small town, it opens all kinds of talk. I have felt everything she felt and it was like my words finally being expressed.

She decides to escape to the house left to her by her grandmother on the lake and meets a reclusive writer. After several hysterical embarrassing moments, they finally become friends and being a journalism major herself, she decides to write a horror novel where the house that she and her cheating ex-husband shared eats him.

Her mother and brother are perfect complements to her part. All in all, the characters are believable, funny and you ride the roller coaster of the ups and downs of divorce with her.

Being a Navy SEAL is more than a career to Alan “Frisco” Francisco—it is his whole world. So when a bullet wound threatens his future in the Navy, he is determined to achieve a full recovery…all on his own. But his lovely neighbor Mia Summerton has other plans for him. She can’t mend his wounded body, but can she heal his heart?

    Story

I'd heard about Frisco in several of the Alpha Squad Seal's books, but his story is great! Take a tough SEAL who can take down any enemy, who also overcame an alcoholic father and difficult childhood and then take it all away from him leaving him feeling useless and desperate. He can barely walk, his sister's addictions have landed her in a jail or rehab situation and left him with her small daughter and a criminal that wants the money back that his sister took from him and call in the SEAL team. Add to that a beautiful neighbor that would be glad to help him, but his manly pride is pricked that he can't carry his own groceries up the stairs. Frisco finally figures out that being a man doesn't come from taking out terrorists, but from accepting what life deals you and making it work -that's what a true SEAL does. Action, love and recovery and a SEAL with a very PINK couch. Another great Brockman story!

U.S. Seal Wes Skelly, who you've met in previous books, goes on a blind date with Brittany, sister-in-law to U.S. Seal Harlan "Cowboy" Jones and sister Mel. Both dread the date and it begins with Brittany putting him at ease by saying "Let's just say we're not going to be interested in each other and enjoy the night out." With the pressure off, they become friends, learn a lot about each other and work together to catch the stalker of the sister of Wes's long time crush. A lot of good romance, insight into their own characters with a mystery/thriller in the background. Reminds me of some of Jennifer Crusie/ Bob Mayer co-written books like "Don't Look Down."

When Andie tries to gain closure with her ex-husband, he asks one final favor of her. A distant cousin has died and left North the guardian of two orphans. When Andie meets the two children, she realizes the situation is much worse than she feared. Carter and Alice aren’t your average delinquents, and the creepy old house where they live is being run by the worst housekeeper since Mrs. Danvers. Complicating matters is Andie’s fiancé’s suspicion that this is all a plan by North to get Andie back.

Great characters, interesting complicated story, but I just can't get into these paranormal stories. The romance is believable, the characters real, even the ghosts and that part of the story is well written, but it ends with two more good ghosts joining them and left me feeling defeated -they and the poor kids will never be free of ghosts even after the powerful struggle they went through to rid themselves of the evil ghosts they had finally sent on to the afterlife. Great story -I just don't get the romance of the whole paranormal thing.

Nine years ago Richard Allen fled England when his avaricious father, the Earl of Manford, betrothed him to Julia Miller, the young daughter of London’s wealthiest merchant. Having seen how his father’s ambition ruined his older brother’s prospects for happiness with an arranged marriage, free-spirited Richard takes to the sea, determined to live his own life. In the Caribbean, he joins a band of treasure-hunting pirates and adopts the persona of a Frenchman named Jean Paul.

Heather says: "Great first summer read !"
    "A great read (or "listen")!!!"
    Overall

This is a great story, not predictable as many romances are -it starts off sounding typical -a groom that runs away from a predetermined marriage and a girl trying to get out of the contract, but being Lindsey, nothing goes as planned. The characters are solid, multi-faceted and believable and the romance is anything but typical, but still gives you the happily ever after you've been waiting for!
