"Best book I've read in a LONG time"
I'm writing this review based on when I read the book. I loved it, the story is great, characters interesting, and the plot is SO interesting and exciting. However, I listened to it several months after reading it just because I loved it so much, and the narration isn't what I'd hoped. The narrator makes Katniss seem way more childish and girly than I pictured her, and her male voices were interesting to say the least. She does a good drunk Haymitch but I would suggest reading this book instead of listening to it if possible!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this book
"Least favorite of the 3 but still super exciting"
I think I formed a really high standard for this series based off the first two books and this third book just didn't live up to that standard.
The story was still incredibly exciting and well performed. The author writes beautifully and shared some really interesting thoughts through this last book. I think I was just let down a little by how everything ended; with the story and with the characters.
I'll stop there so as to not give anything away but I still highly recommend this series, just wanted a tiny bit more from this book.
"Interesting idea, could have been better executed"
I wanted to like this book, it's a very interesting idea for a dystopian society, but I don't think the author took it to the lengths he could have. The characters had the potential to be very engaging but I never found myself getting attached to them. There were definitely a few moments in the story where I felt very engrossed but overall, it just wasn't believable to me.
Maybe there were too many ideas introduced that I felt weren't properly explored so it prevented me from really getting into it.
And the narrator is verrrrry monotone also so beware.
"Favorite book of the series so far!"
After listening to Voyager I was hoping for something a little different and certainly got what I wished for. This book, besides the first, was my favorite of the series. Same adventure and romance as always but with excellent turns of fate. Loved it!
"Same beautiful writing, new character dynamics"
This 3rd book definitely has a different dynamic to it. The character's are no longer their young, naive, inexperienced selves. Years of different experiences have sculpted our main characters, not in such an extreme way that they are different people, but their priorities, loyalties, and intentions have spread wider than just each other. Of course I loved this story just as much as the others, plenty of romance, intrigue, and humor. Adventurous as always, but new and unexpected.
Already started the 4th!
"A great follow up, can't wait for the next listen!"
Again I'm more than pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this series is. Diana Gabaldon's words are beautiful and the story is exciting, tragic, romantic, and adventurous. Can't say enough good things!
"So glad I gave this a listen!"
I bought this book a while back, as it was recommended to me, but I just couldn't get around to listening to it. I think the length was daunting for me but as soon as I started listening I was hooked.
The writing is wonderful as is the performance and the story riveting. The genre is not my 'go to' choice when picking novels to read but I am so glad I did.
Loved every minute of it!
"Not nearly as good as the first"
I was unpleasantly surprised at this second book. It was slow, lackluster, and Ky's voice is so terribly whiny it made it hard to listen to.
I'm wanting to finish the series since I've read the first two books but this book is definitely making me contemplate whether or not I will. I'd like to say something nice about the book but it just was not up to par with the first and definitely not up to par with other dystopia novels.
"An excellent followup"
Hat's off to Veronica Roth for another exciting, puzzling, and beautifully written novel.
Beatrice's character definitely goes through some psychological trials in this book which just makes me like her even more. I appreciate that the story line didn't just lollygag to the end like many '2nd books' of dystopian trilogies. This story had just as much going on in it as the first and Roth does a great job in integrating both the first and second novels while setting up for the third in an subtle way.
The ending is SUCH a cliffhanger, I hate that I have to wait for the next book! Loved it!
"Guess it just wasn't my thing?"
For all the hype surrounding this book, I wasn't really impressed. It was shocking at times, yes, but perhaps the genre just isn't my thing, which is understandable considering the book's content! hah
I will say, however, that Anastasia's voice didn't bother me as it did some people, I thought she sounded like a woman in her early 20's, which...she was.
I'm still contemplating on whether or not to get the next book, the fact that its a trilogy makes me think there's more to the story that might get me to like it more. And the ending just leaves you champing at the bit for more... In the mean time I'll go back to my young adult novels to recover haha
"Better than I thought!"
I liked this book, it's exactly what you look for when you think dystopian society. It's not apocalyptic like many dystopian novels, it's just about a very rigid and planned society.
Needless to say, this book is centered around a love story and while there are exciting and intense moments, overall, it's a well paced, contemplative plot. So, if you're wanting a fast paced, action packed novel, keep looking.
I think its similarity to The Giver ends at the ideals of the society, beyond that, these two books are not alike. So whether you liked or did not like The Giver will not necessarily dictate your liking this book.
I think the performer did a fine job, her voice is definitely 'girly' but it should be! I'm excited to listen to the next book!
