Jeffery Archer has been a favorite of mine since "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" way back before audiobooks were even thought of. This book is one of his best, combining history, real characters, probably a little fiction, adventure and romance all rolled into a masterful tale of the guy who probably beat Hillary to the top of Everest by 40 years! We may never know for sure, but the end of the book had me wishing there was more, and I had tears in my eyes and a smile on my face. George Mallory sounds like I guy I would have been honored to know. I recommend this book to anyone who has loved, lived and dreamed!
When I saw this fourth Odd Thomas book, I screamed with delight! The character lives on and there is nothing stale about this sequel. Odd just keeps on being the common man's version of Superman without all those pesky special abilities. He's like a combination of McGyver(creative in a pinch),Friar Tuck(surprising in a fight)and Harry Potter without his magic wand(sweet, smart and lovable). This character will live on, I am sure. I recommend this and the previous books in the series. And I love the Golden retrievers that always show up in all of Dean Koontz's stories. It's a bit like Alfred Hitchcock always walking through a scene in every one of his movies. Dean, we hope Odd remains in your lineup!
Who could have thought our man Odd could end up in a monastery with such a collection of characters! And just when you think you have the good guys and the villans figured out, Koontz throws the hook and fouls that line of thinking. He has used the twist ending to it's best in all the Odd books, but this one really had me holding my breath. Great suspense, laced with that comic edge I love about Koontz.
Dean Koontz has done it--brought us more Odd. Sorry, Dean, but you can't leave it here! This is a great sequel, with enough creepy stuff to remind you who wrote this, but a sweet developing character that makes you want to know more. His adventures with the real characters and his memory of characters weaves a wonderful story. I recommend Odd to anyone. Warning---you will get hooked!
I read this without knowing anything about it previously, but purely because of Dean Koontz (yes, I am a fan----any man who can write like this and loves golden retrievers is OK by me!) This book sharpened my appetite for more of Odd and his interesting life. I find myself casting the movie in my head while listening. And it's terrific! More Odd!!
I read this book about 20 years ago and loved it then. When I listened on Audible, it was every bit as entertaining and scary as I remember, but more like watching a movie! In fact, it should BE a movie! Dean Koontz has a comic side to his horror writing that other writers of this genre don't have. Just when the goosebumps are starting to form, he makes you laugh. And the reader is wonderful. I recommend this book even if you recall reading it long ago as I did.
I listened to this with two co-workers and we could not wait to get to work so we could see what was going to happen next! This is SK's best in a long time---classic of the style that made him famous, classic without being predictable. A great read and I will recommend it to a few of my friends who claimed they lost interest in King after "It".
I gave this book one star because we don't have the choice of giving the "thumbs down" symbol. (Perhaps you could consider adding that.) I buy a lot of audiobooks and listen to them at work with my coworkers. One is a man who thinks this is great stuff but is embarrassed bt the foul language and descriptions of the completely unrealistic sex fantasies. We all end up making jokes about it. Scott Brick as a narrator sounds like a really bad impersonation of Captain Kirk. The plot and story line has really been compromised by these things. If it were written for the story and not for the sensational fantasies in the characters' heads it might be better. I was gonna say "it must be a guy thing" but even our guy agrees with us. This is my first Barry Eisler book and probably will be my last. And Mr. Eisler is probably happy I am not his editor.
