Joe Cantrell, owner of the Gansett Island Ferry Company, has been in love with Janey McCarthy for as long as he can remember. At the same time, Janey has been dating or engaged to doctor-in-training David Lawrence. When things go horribly wrong between David and Janey, she calls her "fifth brother" Joe, one of the few people in her close circle who lives on the mainland. Janey decides a few days with Joe is just what she needs before she goes home to the island to face her parents and family with the news of her broken engagement.

Another great love story! Starts out steamy and ends that way, too! Love all the characters and that they appear in multiple books in the series. Great consistency by the author. Can't wait to listen to book 3! Gave 4 stars because the narrator sometimes stumbles on her words. 5 stars for the story!

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

91 year-old Ira Levinson is kept concious after a car wreck by visions of his late wife, Ruth, who recounts stories of their lifetime together. A few miles away, at a local rodeo, Sophia Danko, a senior at Wake Forest, meets a young cowboy named Luke. Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

    Bj says: "Fantastic story"

    Overall

Excellent story with an interesting twist. Not as predictable as Sparks' stories before this one. Kind of slow at times, made me thankful for Audible's speed settings. But the story was still satisfying and never boring. Recommended for romantics and lovers of happy endings!

What did you like best about this story?

Jack Reacher. He is the man. Clever. Tough. Has that I-don't-take-sh*t-from-anybody attitude, and I love that about him. I also love that Lee doesn't always give Reacher the easy way out. He doesn't let his main character off the hook in sticky situations. Reacher has to work and live his story, not just have it written for him. It's great!

I really enjoyed the characters, they are all interesting. Lee is great at giving everyone their own story.

I like all the gruesome details Lee includes. He made this horribly realistic and didn't hold back. He knows how to hook the reader (listener in this case) and keep them hooked.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His booming voice is amazing! It's sexy and rough, and he paces the reading perfectly. He knows when to be gentle and careful, and he knows when to apply a sense of urgency to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Fantastic narration! One of the best I've heard!

    Any additional comments?

My first Reacher novel, and it won't be my last! I loved it!

Julie Barenson's young husband left her two unexpected gifts before he died - a puppy named Singer and the promise that he would always be watching over her. Now, four years later, 29-year-old Julie is far too young to have given up on love. She may be ready to risk caring for someone again. But who?

If you could sum up The Guardian in three words, what would they be?

    Predictable. Romantic. Bittersweet.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the dog, Singer. He is the real hero of the story, and Sparks did such a good job of giving the dog a personality of his own.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Isabel Keating?

I have listened to many of Mark Kay Andrews' books narrated by Isabel Keating in the past. If I see her name, I usually will give the book a try. She's a good narrator, especially with southern accents and outrageous characters. This performance wasn't up to par with the MKA books she's narrated, but it was still pretty good.

If you could take any character from The Guardian out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Mike. He sounds like a great guy once you get to know him.

    Any additional comments?

Not the best Sparks fare, but it was a decent story that kept me interested and had some good plot twists. This was a nice change from his usual love stories. And, of course, even though I thought I was safe...he made me cry big baby tears at the end! Have your tissues ready!

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

Such an entertaining listen. Margaret Atwood's excellent prose is given so much life by Danes! It was like she was acting out the novel just for me. I suppose she was in a way. Again, Atwood's prose is excellent. Her words flow like water at times. I don't know if that had more to do with Danes' fantastic narration, but I suspect if I had read the book myself, I would come to the same conclusion.

I am not ashamed to admit that I did peek at the Spark Notes online a few times just to get some clarification and further explanation, and it really helped to open my eyes as far as Biblical references and things of that nature. I'm not the most studied person when it comes to the Bible or religious studies. I did also have a bit of a head-scratching moment at the end of the novel, too, in the Historical Notes section, because hearing the names of the professors and locations mentioned didn't make sense to me until I saw them written out on virtual paper. So reading the character list and details off the Spark Notes was of great service to me as well, and that gave me a better sense of the ending.

The Handmaid's Tale is interesting, scary and strange to think about. Definitely makes me appreciate my life and all things in it. If you have the opportunity to give this book a listen, I highly recommend it. Even if you don't understand all of it at first, Claire Danes will definitely hold your attention with her skillful narration, and you can dig deeper later.

In the fall of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths.

The narrator performed well...wasn't boring or monotone. But I'm sorry to say that this is my least favorite NS book of all time! I had a hard time staying interested in the story, and I didn't really connect much with the characters. But I stayed with it! It felt like a sob story from the beginning. I am so disappointed...I don't know if Mr.Sparks was going through a depression or grief stage when he wrote this, but it sure was rough. I listened to the whole thing (to get my credit's worth), and, despite the gray story, the ending did choke me up a little and brought some tears to my eyes. If there is one thing Mr.Sparks CAN ALWAYS DO, it's make me cry. Damn you, Nicholas Sparks! Unless you are a completist, spare yourself the time and the tears.

Would you try another book from James Patterson and Liza Marklund and/or the narrators?

I would definitely listen to another Jame Patterson. He always delivers fast, entertaining reads/listens.

If you’ve listened to books by James Patterson and Liza Marklund before, how does this one compare?

This was my first James Patterson and Liza Marklund story. They seem make a good team.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

I got a little lost at times with the different voices...I usually prefer to listen to just one narrator. I like that there were male and female voices, but I was expecting them to read the male and female lines like a play...didn't like how each narrator spoke both male and female in the different chapters. They each performed well, though.

    Any additional comments?

This would probably make a good beach read, but I didn't find the story to be quite memorable. There was a steamy sex scene, but it gets spoiled by some gross details revealed later in the story.
