This story has an interesting premise, but the book is actually fairly predictable. The characters seem so thin and undeveloped. It is like someone just telling you something that happened, rather than crafting a tale and building suspense. During the story, the reader is being led along, anticipating what might happen. It seemed to drag, and I found that I began wishing they would just hurry up with it. I really did not need to hear the narrator's interpretation of bad singing, especially more than once. This actually delivered some of the most annoying moments I have ever experienced in the 20+ years I have been listening to aduible books. I kept hoping the book would improve but at about the 3/4 mark I gave up and started a different book.
Very satisfying to read, a page turner with subtle tones, shadings, inferences, mood swings, and colorations. Tana French knows how to grab the readers and make them care about the characters. I couldn't wait to find out what the characters did next. I actually sneaked it into work and listened with a hidden ear bud for an hour...I HAD TO KNOW what happened next! So smooth, such talent. All the books I have listened to by Tana French were excellent, and can be read in order for best effects, but OK to read out of order too.
Really great book, written in a way that you see it, smell it, feel it like you are IN it...this is one of those books where you sit in the driveway listening, not ready for your ride from work to be over. A great story line, doesn't rush you but gently leads you, fleshing out the detail, filling out the characters - you KNOW them by the end. Great book.
Mesmerizing, kept me up late at night, sat in the driveway after work listening in the car.
It was that good. Pulls you in so you are living it with the character. I had read this book long ago as a paperback, but the narrator really made the difference. She was brilliant, and really enhanced the story's texture and realism.
The characters did not seem plausible, and the story was not interesting. The characters seemed shallow stereotypes. Honestly, I coudn't finish it. It is a rare audio book that I do not finish, but I felt relieved to throw in the towel on this one. I have been a Jonathon Kellerman fan for years, and also like some of the books Faye has written, but this one had little appeal.
This book is very well written, and the characters are vivid and alive - sorry actually many of them are dead by the end of the book. It is about the plague, after all. The author intensely transports you back to this era and surprises the reader at every turn. The story is so well crafted that I felt like I was watching a movie in my mind. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next, and found myself listening late into the night. Not for the squeamish, there is no lack of realistic detail about the hardships of the period and the nightmare of the plague. I love the author's style of writing, having gotten hooked with Caleb's Crossing. The author reads her own book again, but in a more ordinary spoken style, rather that the careful enunciation of Caleb's Crossing that irritated some readers (I liked it). I highly recommend this book of fiction that relies heavily on historical fact, based on a true story. It is fearful, horrifying, suspenseful, colorful, engaging, and irresistable.
Starts a little slow - builds artfully. Much suspense & creativity. Leaves the reader craving for the next book in the series.
What a pleasure to read more about other characters in the Retrievbal Artist series. If you follow the series, this is a natural progression. If you are new to these books, the reader is fabulous on all of them, and some of the other stories are even better than this one. Really great series.
Predictable, more like a chore to read. I didn't actually finish it, just went on to the next book with about 2 hours left.
Decide in advance that you will picture the reader in the time period of the book and that someone might actually speak with severe enunciation. Then - - enjoy the FABULOUS book - you won't be able to put it down. I am looking for other books by this author right now, I can hardly wait!
