I remember following this story on the news as it was breaking, and even though I read the book several years ago, it has lost none of its drama. I wish, however, that John Krakauer would have opted not to narrate his excellent book. He has written singular pieces, but does not convey this one very well. Something with phrasing and pauses is lacking. Still, this is one I will listen to again. The fact that "he was there" certainly makes up for his minor flaws in narration.
So far, classic Hiassen, but I will never find out how it ends, because the reader is deplorably inept! I simply cannot continue listening to this book as all I do is cringe at how Arte Johnson is butchering the story, it's characters, and tempo. This probably would have been a hilarious book with even a mediocre reader. Arte Johnson is one of the worst.
No, I would never try anything else by Arte Johnson. To the contrary, seeing his name as the reader would make me stay away.
I really love this book. It became my entry port for all of Bryce Courtenay's novels and also everything narrated by Humphrey Bowers. The former truly knows how to spin a yarn, and the latter how to bring it alive. That there additionally is more than a kernel of truth in "The Australian Trilogy," makes it all so much better.
I could not stop listening to this book! The narration is top-notch and the story line full of unexpected twists and turns. The characters are well defined, believable, and compelling. I wish Audible would produce more Stroud titles; I am sure this book is not just a lucky draw from this author, and can't wait to listen to more of his work.
I really liked this book, and the authors' narration. The fact that this very dramatic story had not "survived," meaning I had never heard about this before, and now has been brought to life again was very moving. A terrific listen - highly recommended.
