Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

Another wonderful look at life in Afghanistan; this time, through the eyes of a woman. I did not enjoy it quite as much as The Kite Runner. However, I came away so grateful for my freedoms as a woman in this country. And, I feel so sad for those women who exist(ed) under such male/Taliban domination. I learned more about the evolution of conditions in Afghanistan and I enjoy that. I will look for the next Khaled Hosseini book and hope to be one of the first to enjoy it.

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life.

This was an okay book as a filler between some great books I've read & listened to this year. I felt the plot was predictable, but entertaining. It also provided some insight into the Amish lifestyle. A good, light book.

Totally enjoyable and informative! Wasn't sure I wanted to read another book about food and organics, but I'm very glad my friends encouraged that I do so. I didn't particularly enjoy the author's personal narration. As a gardener, food preserver and one who cares greatly about nutrition and good eating, it was very good. As one who owns and loves animals, the chicken and turkey tales were great. Don't miss this book if you care about food sources and learning how easy it is to prepare good food - and how this family did it.

Over the next six years, they became expert and well-traveled researchers, taught themselves German, hunted for clues in Germany, and constructed theories corrective of the history books, all in an effort to identify this sunken U-boat and its crew.

When their son is born, the task of naming him betrays the vexed results of bringing old ways to the new world. Named for a Russian writer by his Indian parents in memory of a catastrophe years before, Gogol Ganguli knows only that he suffers the burden of his heritage as well as his odd, antic name.

Enjoyed this book very much. Appeals to me as I enjoy reading about relationships, watching characters change and learning about other cultures. It isn't The Great Novel, but enjoyable and entertaining.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

A very interesting group of characters. Set during the depression, life takes a turn for this this soon-to-be college graduate. An animal lover myself, I enjoyed learning a little about the elephant and other animal antics. While the nursing home scenes made me laugh, they also made me sad for the 90+year old "prisoners" of their own bodies and circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it with no reservations.

I loved the story(ies) I loved the narrators. I love this author's use of our language, her metaphors, her "spinning" of words... She creates the feeling of being there in the moment. She is brilliant! I am sorry it is finished and am about to look for more works by Diane Setterfield.

  • The Kite Runner

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

I'm an avid audio book lover who has listened to hundreds. This book is added to my All Time Greatest. It is captivating from the very beginning and (my test of a great book) I was sad when it ended. I wanted more. You will enjoy this book if you like getting to know your characters as "new friends." I thoroughly enjoyed learning how the Afghanistan wars affected "real" people and their struggles. It is nearly a 12 hour listen, but it went much too quickly. It is read by the author and I believe his slight accent makes this book come more alive through his use of his language here and there. Wonderful book!
