This is fine perhaps great writing. extraordinary, beautifully read. Ammazingly well written, verges on true poetry. Hemmingway has been quoted as saying "she has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with words, picking up whatever was furnished on the job and nailing them together and sometimes making an okay pig pen. But [she] can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers ... it really is a bloody wonderful book." I have to agree with Mr. Hemmingway, this girl outshines most good writers. I saw one review that dissed the book, perhaps Motzart isn't up to that person's standards either...??? dunno!
Among histories of valor, courage, tenacity, and endurance in battle I cannot think of any greater or more terrible.
One of the most outstanding things about this story was how completely ignorant, arrogant, and even criminal the top brass was in relation to the situation on the ground for these boys. These boys caught it from both sides, yet held up.
Mr. Fitzgerald does a great job reading. He is not given to melodramatic tones as some macho war story readers are. His is a masculine voice that does not lack and needs no overstatement. The recording studio makes use of some dramatic effects which are a little over done.
This is an amazing story of some of the greatest heroism of that generation who resisted the sinister, dreadful axis powers of WWII. These blokes embody the highest of warrior virtues. They simply would not quit and resisted death and surrender to the utmost. These guys were above and beyond heroic! Hats off to them.
thorough, written by a journalist who was in Germany during Hitler's rise. a must read for any serious student of the 20th century.
classic reader of the very best sort. this is one you can put in your pipe and smoke for a while, go over again. think about, not a quick read, only a must read and study...
very long no can do at one time.
If I had the time and temperament to sit and read this book i would choose the print version, especially on account of the battle maps. Pondering the depth and scope of wwi's subsequent impact on humanity is worthy of many hours reading and study at hearth side and this is one of the best vehicles whereby to so deliberate.
explaining some of the back ground the groups such as the "black hand" who conspired to kill the Austrian Duke, explaining why the Duke felt he needed to be in Sarajevo at that time... explaining the initial war mobilization plans that each country felt it had to invoke, explaining earlier diplomatic and economic events that lead each country feel that they needed to be emphatic in their respective postures as August 1918 approached... I'm sure I could count many more on careful reflection.
very apt. I felt as if the author himself was reading the book.
what fools these mortals be!
This book attempts to explain all angles of wwi very carefully and may be the best book of its kind to address the subject.. In many ways wwi is the most important event of the 20th century. Mr. Meyer gives us extraordinary depth and breadth exploring fine points of the leaders' lives of all the major countries, economic considerations, strategic theories, and so on... I do not have the time to sit and read a volume such as this but i often wished i had the book in hand to more carefully study the battle maps... I found it interesting and easy to listen to all the way through. I may well buy the book and am planning to listen to it at least one more time. If you're interested in history this one is a must.
NO, BECAUSE JOBS IS TOO BLEAK OF A PERSONALITY.
AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE EXTRAORDINARY HISTORY OF AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL CREATIVITY.
I'VE NEVER BOUGHT AN APPLE BECAUSE THEY TRY NOT TO OPEN UP TO OPEN SOFTWARE CONTRIBUTIONS. VERY INTERESTING AS TO THE DEMONIC DRIVE THAT COULD BE CALLED CREATIVE GENIUS. OBVIOUSLY JOBS HAS FATHERED AN OUTSTANDINGLY SUCCESSFUL COMPANY BUT AS A PERSON HE'S AS BLEAK AS THE SIBERIAN STEPPES. AFTER READING THE BOOK I HAVE ONE MORE REASON NOT TO BUY APPLE BUT I UNDERSTAND BETTER AS TO WHY SO MANY ARE SO ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THEIR PRODUCTS.
The author was a Vietnam correspondent beginning in 1959. He was there! He managed to get personal interviews with many of the top key players before and after the fall of Saigon laying out an extraordinary vista from the initial intercourse with Europeans to the deluge at the USA's ignoble retreat there. Beautifully done, verging on poetic at times. I may not agree with many of the conclusions he leads towards in this tome but it is well thought out and clearly expressed. Bravo! Well done!
The reader does an excellent job as well.
IT IS HARD TO FIND A MORE DEPLORABLE LEADER IN THE 20TH CENTURY THAN MAO OR EVEN HIS EQUAL. HITLER WAS A NICE GUY BY COMPARISON. IT IS NO WONDER THIS AUTHOR SOUNDS BIASED AGAINST HIM. THIS BOOK SHOULD SERVE AS A WAKE UP CALL SEEING THAT THIS TERRIBLY TRAUMATIZED NATION WILL SOON BE AT THE APEX OF WORLD POWER. HAVING BEEN REARED BY SUCH A CRUEL TASK MASTER WHAT KIND OF LEADERSHIP WILL IT PROVIDE IN THE WAKE OF USA'S PREEMINENCE? METHINKS THE NATIONS WILL HARKEN BACK FONDLY TO THE DAYS WHEN AMERICA WAS AT THE WORLD'S HELM. WE HAD THE LIKES OF GEORGE WASHINGTON , DECENT AND NOBEL IN WORD AND DEED WHO SET OUR PRECEDENTS. BY COMPARISON: RED CHINA'S GOT ONE VERY LONG CRUEL CRUEL NIGHTMARE TO LOOK TO AT HER FOUNDING. MERCY!
HE'S A GOOD READER. DUNNO ABOUT CHINESE PRONUNCIATION.
THIS IS A VERY UNSYMPATHETIC APPRAISAL OF BLACKWATER AND TOM WEINER, THE READER, IS WELL CAST FOR HIS ROLE. I LIKE HISTORIES BY ACADEMIC HISTORIANS NOT PROPAGANDISTS. IT IS CLEAR THAT THE AUTHOR DOES NOT LIKE BLACKWATER, ITS GENESIS, OR ITS FOUNDERS. PROBABLY BLACKWATER HAS A CASE TO ANSWER IN MANY AREAS BUT I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO COME TO ANY UNDERSTANDING GIVEN SUCH BLATANTLY SLANTED MATERIAL. THIS AUTHOR IS AS ABOUT AS OBJECTIVE ABOUT THE RIGHT WING AS RUSH LIMBAUGH IS ABOUT THOSE ON THE LEFT.
