Philip Roth is the most decorated American writer of his generation. In Exit Ghost, this master author crafts what may be the final chapter in the story of his beloved hero Nathan Zuckerman. After 11 years of isolation in his New England mountain refuge, Zuckerman returns to New York City and makes three important connections that threaten his carefully protected sense of isolation.

I could not stop listening to this book once I started. I listened to it in the car, while I was cutting the grass, and while I was on lunch. I have learned more from Philip Roth about my country then from any politician, history book, or New York Times editorial. He is incredibly perceptive and, in my mind, is the greatest writer of all time.He truly tells it like it is.

Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

What disappointed you about Edge of Eternity?

I love both the author and the narrator. I thought the first two books in this series were wonderful.

However, this book was terrible from beginning to end. It should have been titled, "secret sex lives of our leaders during the cold war." Lots of graphic sex. Every female was beautiful, sexy, and willing to get in bed with anyone. 90% of the section on John Kennedy was about his sex life. Not much real history here. While the narration was of highly quality, the dubbed in voices of characters like MLK and JFK were comical.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    diappointment

Pi Patel has been raised in a zoo in India. When his father decides to move the family to Canada and sell the animals to American zoos, everyone boards a Japanese cargo ship. The ship sinks, and 16-year-old Pi finds himself alone on a lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra with a broken leg, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon it's just Pi, the tiger, and the vast Pacific Ocean - for 227 days. Pi's fear, knowledge, and cunning keep him alive until they reach the coast of Mexico, where the tiger disappears into the jungle.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The narrator really helps make the story come alive. The story can be appreciated on so many different levels. You never know what is going to happen next.
