"eh. didn't love it; didn't hate it ..."
No new twists to reaper lore ala Dead Like Me and Supernatural. The twist may be the introduction of Bee-on-she to the mythical creature parade in literature but it didn't grab my interest. Better than many free books I've read/listened too but still somewhat bland.
"Please redo with professional narration!"
I'm listening to his book on writing but it's not an epic tale it's a craft book.
Just thought the sentiment was worth repeating ... Mr. King, Do not narrate your work. You are a master storyteller and I love your books. But, alas, you are not a narrator.
"What's up with the narrator?"
In between ... it's a good story if a bit formulaic. Poor choice of narrator but not bad enough to ruin the book. Entertaining but not overly memorable. Bare in mind it's for the Young Adult audience and set expectations accordingly.
It's an original idea ... the hunger games ... wish I had thought of it :)
I did listen to the rest of the series even though Carolyn McCormick's narration was ... uh ... weird. Where in the United States does anyone speak like that? What's that accent? It was off-putting but not so off-putting to stop me from listening to the series. Still I will not start another book where she is the narrator.
Yes.
"Even a bad narrator can't ruin Ray Bradbury"
The best thing is the insightful and poetic nature or Ray Bradbury's writing. It shines through even under stilted narration.
No. His attempts to render the voices of women and children are comical at best ... unintentional parody at worst. The voice of Miss Foley is just ridiculous. I didn't know whether to laugh or be offended by the mocking quality of it.
"Boring, gloomy and hard to get into ..."
The most interesting thing is the girl and how she came to be the way she is but the details of that don't come out until the later books. The least interesting is the character of Mikael Blomkvist, his personal life/history, and time spent with Henrik Vanger ... unfortunately that's most of the story.
I don't get the fuss around these books. I started and stopped the print version a number of times and almost gave up altogether. It was the audio book that allowed me to finish because I could do other things while listening.
"An old man spinning yarns about the old days ..."
only his old days happen to include the birth of the worlds greatest rock and roll band.
I recommend it to anyone interested in 50s and 60s history. So many RnR bios are nothing but strippers, drug rehab, and infighting ad nauseam. Keith captures his life and times along with his love of music ... like sitting on the porch with an old man spinning yarns about the old days.
A few people complained about the change in narration. I liked it ... Joe Hurley sounds like Keith and adds life to the narration where Johnny Depp is a little flat. I'm a big Depp fan so was disappointed ... he's a great actor but not necessarily a great narrator. Still I love this book and have listened to it more than once.
