When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early 40s, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

...Maybe it would have been read on its merit rather than its author's achievements. And who may enjoy it more? Not my friends.
I have to admit that I could not finish this book.

Would you recommend The Casual Vacancy to your friends? Why or why not?

No. If I do not like it, I do not reccommend.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

When a local woman tells Sergeant Hamish Macbeth that she doesn't remember what happened the previous evening, he's not unduly worried. After all, she's been out drinking and he'd prefer not to be bothered with such an arrogant and annoying woman. But when her body is discovered in a ditch, Hamish is forced to investigate a crime that the only known witness - now dead - has forgotten....

Would you try another book from M. C. Beaton and/or Graeme Malcolm?

    Beaton, yes, Malcolm definitely not.

    Any additional comments?

After listening to at least a dozen Beaton novels, I will finish this one, but will listen to the samples before I buy another.

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Same old... I found it borning to be honest, and I am rarely bored by my choices.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. Waste of money. Persevered for a couple of hours and gave up.

Three best-selling authors. Three possible brides. Three separate tales. They come together for an Amish wedding. Priscilla King has dreamed of being married to Chester Lapp since she was sixteen. With the help of her sister Naomi’s matchmaking skills, Chester proposes to Priscilla on her nineteenth birthday. As the wedding day approaches, problems emerge: an attendant with poison ivy, a failed celery crop, and a torn wedding dress. At the same time, Priscilla’s best friend Rose is convinced her fiancé is hiding something....

Interesting to have three authors write from different perspectives within the same group of characters. Not the best I have listened to, but pleasant enough.
