  • The Elusive Bride

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 18 mins)
    • By Stephanie Laurens
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A second battle-hardened, completely unstoppable, all-male hero, an ex-officer of the Crown, confronts the deadly enemy known only as the Black Cobra. He's focused on his mission, then sees a lady he never dreamed he'd see again - with an assassin on her heels. She secretly followed him, unaware her path is deadly - or that she'll join him to battle a treacherous foe.Through ever-present peril, through passion, desire, and ecstasy, they race to reach England - and their destiny.

    Deborah says: "Worse than usual"
    "Thanks but no thanks"

I have read most of Stephanie's books and some of my all time favorite historicals were written by her. I think it must be heard to maintain that level of writing as so many prolific writers books start getting pretty boring. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. I won't read any more of the Bride books and only hope that Stephanie will be able to come back. Don't get me wrong, we all have bad days, so read all of her earlier books. This one was BORING and trivial. YOu have no idea who those people are/were. There was literally no backstory. The book was beyond one dimensional and the romance aspect left me thinking, HUH? Where's the romance?

  • Hotshot: Buchanan-Renard, Book 11

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Julie Garwood
    • Narrated By Amy McFadden
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A graduate of a prestigious French culinary school, Peyton has just lost her job as a food critic after rightfully accusing her boss of sexual harassment. Out of work and in a bad place personally, to Peyton a year doing something completely different sounds wonderful. Peyton dives into learning the resort business but is quickly derailed by an escalating chain of events that puts her life in danger. She refuses to be intimidated - until she’s nearly killed. Then she calls on her childhood friend and protector, Finn MacBain, now with the FBI, and asks for his help.

    L.W. says: "Interesting and Enjoyable"
    "What a disappointment"
    What disappointed you about Hotshot?

I have read most of Garwood's books and so many are among my favorite books. Some I have reread more than once. This one is just moronic. Seriously. The lead female character did not report a serious case of harassment, a man attempting to run her off the road and who fired a gun multiple times at her car, etc. Her HR department tells her she can't file a harassment complaint until she works at the company for 3 months. Really. Would anyone above the age of 20 be that dumb? DUH. She had a tape recording of the harassment and apparently didn't think that was evidence enough. She fled the state and returned to her home in Texas. Still, she didn't report any of the above. Her reason was she couldn't afford a lawyer. So stupid that it hurts to listen to it.

How could the performance have been better?

The reader was just awful. I don't know how to describe it.

  • Striking Distance: I-Team Series, Book 6

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Pamela Clare
    • Narrated By Kaleo Griffith
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

TV reporter Laura Nilsson, known as the "Baghdad Babe," spent eighteen months in an Al-Qaeda compound after being kidnapped live on the air. Two years later, she's still wondering why.No mission in Javier Corbray's fourteen years as a Navy SEAL affected him the way Laura's rescue did.

STEPHANIE says: "This one is so-so."
    "One of the best"
Would you listen to Striking Distance again? Why?

I don't listen to many more than once. That isnt because it isnt good.

Have you listened to any of Kaleo Griffith’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I dont like the way he does women's voices. Not his fault. Some men can do it some cant.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Any additional comments?

I have read almost all of this series and have been a romantic suspense addict for decades. I seldom write reviews but the depth of this particular story appealed to me on many levels. If you like a book that provides multi dimensional story lines, reaches deep into a character to explain motivation and why/how they became who they are, then check this one out. Pamela's storyline reaches into our current lives. The men who service this country pay an incredibly high price and so do their families. The female lead had a life experience that forever changed her and one that most women can relate It is one we can relate to based on the headlines in our 21st century life. They are both wounded, found each other, and were able to help each other. EXCELLENT writing and story line. Thank you.

  • Raintree: Inferno

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Linda Howard
    • Narrated By Hillary Huber, Stefan Rudnicki

Two hundred years after the Raintree clan defeated and abandoned them on a small Caribbean Island, the Ansara wizards are rising again to take on their bitterest foes. Despite their extraordinary powers and supernatural origin, the Raintree have largely blended into the modern world. They are bankers, cops, husbands, wives, and lovers in the society of humankind. But now, from Nevada to North Carolina, the rejoined battle will measure the endurance of their people.

Virginia A. Mickelson says: "A 'no ending' story"
    "A partial book"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I agree with previous reviewer who said this story was half a book. It ends right in the middle of the story, seriously! I'm not saying don't read it just want you to know. In addition the female reader was incredibly annoying. She sounded like a nasal twanged bad tempered immature valley girl. When she read the man't comments her voice was much more tolerable. She really ruined the book for me. In future, if she is narrator, I will listen to sample to see if she is still doing that horrible valley girl imitation.

As to the story, it was ok. Big disappointment because I have read all of Linda's previous books and loved almost all. This one was so weak that I had towonder if she was sick, hated the story herself, what? Just very very bad.

I am now reading the 2nd book. We shall see.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Ripped off. It ended half way into the story.

Would you be willing to try another one of Hillary Huber and Stefan Rudnicki ’s performances?

Unlikely I can take Hillary. Stefan was ok but didn't much care for his voice though not irritating like Hillary.

Was Raintree worth the listening time?

  • Big Bad Wolf: The Others Series

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Christine Warren
    • Narrated By Kate Reading

Missy Roper's fantasies have revolved around Graham Winters since the moment they met. But the imposing leader of the Silverback werewolf clan always seemed oblivious to Missy's existence.

Robbie says: "Good Things Come in Small Packages!"
    "Big Mistake"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Favorite authors: Karen Robards, Linda Howard, Nalini Singh, Julie James and a few others. tried this as am looking for a new author as I have read all by my favs. One, the reader cannot vary her voice and her male voice was very off putting. She just sounded silly. Two, the story line was almost non existent. I am not looking for realism or I wouldn't be reading romance...but this was just plain dumb and boring. No real character development etc. On to the next new author.

Would you ever listen to anything by Christine Warren again?

Won't be reading anymore of hers.
