When his picture appeared on the cover of Texas Monthly, Joaquin Jackson became the icon of the modern Texas Rangers. Nick Nolte modeled his character on him in the movie Extreme Prejudice. Jackson even had a speaking part of his own in The Good Old Boys with Tommy Lee Jones. But the role that Jackson has always played the best is that of the man who wears the silver badge cut from a Mexican cinco peso coin, a working Texas Ranger.

America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

Would you listen to The Road again? Why?

I would listen again, I enjoyed the readers ability to transform the characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The boy, his naive dialogs made the plot more intense for me as a father. The contrast of innocence and extreme evil kept my interest.

What does Tom Stechschulte bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The contrast was amazing from the hard heated father to the innocent boy.
