Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

    "Great book...narrator...not so great"
    Overall

I really liked this book! It kept me riveted to see what would happen next. Some people have talked about violence but to be honest there is more violence in a reality show on cable than in this book...you can handle it. I thought it was well written and very engaging. I did not however, like the narrator. When I first started listening I felt like she sounded like an awful robot, very stilted and stiff, but I had purchased the book so I persevered and I got used to her cadence enough to finish listening to the book. I will be checking the next two books out of the library to read myself rather than have to listen to this narrator again. It is a shame because the book is amazing and I would prefer to listen since I don't have the time to sit down and read it myself.

Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction.

    "Heart-wrenchingly sad"
    Overall

All the reviews that I have read on this book have been great so I was expecting a wonderful story that was sad, but hopeful. Hmmm...I didn't get what I wanted. Instead, this is a book that is truly heart-wrenching and at times downright depressing. The narration is superb for the audiobook and the story kept me involved so I wanted to finish the book, but I could not identify or understand Lavinia's character and how, at times, she could be so spineless and clueless. I did fall in love with all the rest of the characters, especially Mama and I love the genteel Southern plantation picture that this book painted. I know that stories like this probably happened many times in the South before the civil war but it is very difficult to hear of the hopelessness and sheer evil that might have existed. It is a decent book, but if you are looking to be uplifted by a nice story set on a plantation in the South...this is not the book for you.
