Irish novelist Anne Enright won the coveted Man Booker Prize for her eloquent novel The Gathering. In The Forgotten Waltz, Enright crafts a stunning tale about a Dublin woman’s affair and its heartrending consequences. Gina Moynihan is already married when she meets Seán Vallely. But longing and desire soon overtake them - and their lives begin to crumble shortly after.

    Story

Although this story documents an affair and is very bittersweet and realistic, it starts as one story and ends up as another. This story construct does not really work.. Most interesting and bittersweet is how people making decisions to leave a relationship cannot really let go of the last relationship.

Spring 1945. As work on the first atomic bomb nears completion on a remote mesa in New Mexico, Karl Bruner, a Manhattan Project security officer, is found murdered in nearby Santa Fe. Is Bruner the victim of a violent sexual encounter, as the local police believe, or is his death a crime that threatens to jeopardize the secret of the Project itself?

This audiobook was most likely recorded on tape many years ago, so the sound is like being in a tunnel or submarine. Story similar to Kanon's other books, and because I have head other books--I could guess the ending. Still, all in all, for a murder mystery it did keep me interested.

At the center of the intrigue is Hollywood star, Frederic Stahl. September 1938. On the eve of the Munich Appeasement, Stahl arrives in Paris, on loan from Warner Brothers to star in a French film. He quickly becomes entangled in the shifting political currents of pre-war Paris - French fascists, German Nazis, and his Hollywood publicists all have their fates tied to him. But members of the clandestine spy world of Paris have a deeper interest in Stahl, sensing a potential asset in a handsome, internationally renowned actor.

Of course Nazi's are evil, but who else is, and running away from them makes this an intriguing story. The narrator was very good and did the male and female parts well. I am glad they used only one narrator because books that use several can be distracting. I would read other books by this author if he changed topics--in the Audible listings it looks like his subject is similar but takes place in other countries. .

Karen Hollander is a celebrated attorney who recently removed herself from consideration for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her reasons have their roots in 1968 - an episode she’s managed to keep secret for more than 40 years. Now, with the imminent publication of her memoir, she’s about to let the world in on that shocking secret - as soon as she can track down the answers to a few crucial last questions. A resonant coming-of-age story and a thrilling political mystery, True Believers is Kurt Andersen’s most ambitious novel to date, introducing a brilliant, funny, and irresistible new heroine to contemporary fiction.

I have enjoyed two other books by Kurt Andersen, and would listen to anything by him again. Vanessa Hart was good, and glad they used only one narrator. When multiple narrators are used it is distracting.

I decided on this book knowing nothing about it. And within a few minutes, discovered that the main character was my age, from the same state, and like me attended an East Coast college in 1968, and a diabetic. It is not often you read a thriller about people you could have been given the inclination. It is fiction but the actual history is well-researched.

Set in New York City in 1938, Rules of Civility tells the story of a watershed year in the life of an uncompromising 25-year-old named Katey Kontent. Armed with little more than a formidable intellect, a bracing wit, and her own brand of cool nerve, Katey embarks on a journey from a Wall Street secretarial pool through the upper echelons of New York society in search of a brighter future.

Would you listen to Rules of Civility again? Why?

I rarely listen to books twice.

Which character ??? as performed by Rebecca Lowman ??? was your favorite?

She did them all well, but was better with the women, but did do a great Tinker Grey.

    Any additional comments?

I avoided this book because it was a debut novel, and am sorry I waited so long. It is interesting that a male author has much better developed female characters than male characters, but it is still a wonderful story. I will look for more of Towles books.

Julia Einstein knew that being a stay-at-home mom had a lot in common with her former job as a celebrity publicist - endless, irrational demands, little to no appreciation, and constant hustle. But it isn't until her husband is laid off from his job and she's forced to go back to work and resurrect screen legend Mary Ford's career that Julia realizes how very much she prefers an actual child to a formerly famous client.

Would you listen to Piece of Work again? Why?

I liked the PR stuff and the getting back into work aspect for once successful people.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    It was good.

What does Emily Durante bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Her narration was great and she could do many voices. I am listening to another book by someone else right now and may stop because of the narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The first 90 minutes was a snooze with the Mommy and baby stuff. It then started to pick up and I am glad I continued.

    Any additional comments?

If she has cut the mother and baby stuff, the book would have been much better. But I still really like the working story.

Tess Monaghan has finally made the move and hung out her shingle as a PI-for-hire, complete with an office in Butchers Hill. Maybe it's not the best address in Baltimore, but you gotta start somewhere, and Tess' greyhound Esskay has no trouble taking marathon naps anywhere there's a roof. Then, in walks Luther Beale, the notorious vigilante who five years ago shot a boy for vandalizing his car. He wants to make reparations to the kids who witnessed his crime, so he needs Tess to find them.

Would you listen to Butchers Hill again? Why?

No, I don't have enough time to listen to a book twice.

What other book might you compare Butchers Hill to and why?

Lippman's other Tess Monahan books are quite good too, this might be my 5th book in the series.

What about Deborah Hazlett???s performance did you like?

She is very good with all the different voices for the many characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Very touching including the facts of the foster care system. However, the ending might be rosier than anything in life.

    Any additional comments?

Sorry to say this. I have listened to a number of Laura Lippman's books, and she is great with Tess Monahan--but not so good when she tries to write fiction with characters where Tess is not part of the story.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not this book, but I would recommend one of Muller's earlier stories. I enjoy hearing about the places in the SF Bay Area because I live here and Muller is very true to the place, she must live here. But this book is a disappointment. Many authors get better as they develop a character over many books. I think Marcia Muller is getting tired of Sharon McComb.

Would you ever listen to anything by Marcia Muller again?

I would think about it. This is her most recent book, and it is not really thought out in plot.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

What do a suburban mom and her troubled daughter, two recently divorced brothers, a pair of former child stars, born-again Christian newlyweds, and a couple of young millionaires have in common? They have all been selected to compete on Lost and Found, a daring new reality TV show. In teams of two, they will race across the globe, from Egypt to Japan, from Sweden to England, to battle for a million-dollar prize.

I don't watch reality shows either, but you get enough familiarity with them just turning on the TV. So I was shying away from this story, even though I like the author's Nobodies Album. And this story had great character development. I wish there were more of Parkhurst's stories in an audible format.

  • The Troubled Man: A Kurt Wallander Mystery

Håkan von Enke, a retired naval officer, disappears during a walk in a forest near Stockholm. Wallander is not officially involved in the investigation, but he is personally affected—von Enke is his daughter’s father-in-law—and Wallander is soon interfering in matters that are not his responsibility. He is confounded by the information he uncovers, which hints at elaborate Cold War espionage.

This book moved along, even though Wallander was quite depressed. It was very apparent that after the supposedly final Wallander mystery, Mankell was looking for ways not to bring him back. Too bad, because Kurt Wallander is so much more interesting than his characters in The Man from Beijing. So he did bring Wallander back for this one, and I am glad. But at times was ready to commit suicide because of the depression.
