  • Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

What did you like best about Gulp? What did you like least?

I thoroughly enjoyed the content as written. The delivery lacked.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The story, and the investigative aspect. Who looks for this stuff? Awesome!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emily Woo Zeller?

The author. She has an obvious comedic tone that emily doesn't deliver effectively.

Was Gulp worth the listening time?

    Yes...

    Any additional comments?

The greatest detraction was the narrator trying to mimic the voices of the various scientists. It sounded mocking even when it wasn't meant to. This is a really cool trip through digestion! I just wish I had time to actually read the book in my own way vs. this. Still love Audible!

The usual mires that Diana leads you into, but the ending is worth it! Provided she just lets it end here... *headbang* Is that the end of this story, Diana? *OwOOwOw...*

Acclaimed author Michael J. Sullivan created instant best sellers with his spellbinding Riyria Revelations series. This first volume introduces Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater, two enterprising thieves who end up running for their lives when they’re framed for the death of the king. Trapped in a conspiracy bigger than they can imagine, their only hope is unraveling an ancient mystery - before it’s too late.

Listened to all 3 parts (six books). So worth it! I'm not a fan of the narrator, but the story is great! I love most of the characters, and how they evolve. Very glad I stuck with it to the end!

  • The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals

"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

Stephen Redding says: "Great presentation of a moral dilemma"
    "An amazing food journey!"
    Overall

I loved this, start to finish! I didn't quite get why I was being buried in corn at the beginning, but the weight of it was removed at the end. Michael Pollan is a compelling storyteller who leaves you to find the moral. I thank him for the journey, and the thought-provoking oberservations. Digging into Second Nature now, and delighted that he narrates it himself.

I'm a fan, and read another book by Cesar based on his general principles, Be the Pack Leader is the one that gave me the tools I needed to feel comfortable putting his advice into practice. The changes have been remarkable, and our pack is already reaping the benefits. It's constantly on my IPod for easy reinforcement. Loved it!
