The writing is, as one would expect from a comedy writer, quite funny. What was strange though is that even though it is the author (comedian Michael Ian Black) who is narrating the story, he reads it in a very monotonous way. What's more is that I am a fan of his standup, but I think he didn't bring very much of his standup personality to the reading of the book. If he had been a bit more engaging in the (...his) story I would have given this 4-5 stars.
This book was great, but unless you're familiar with science fiction I would warn you that it is not the type of science fiction that you'd see in a Hollywood blockbuster. It is far less action-packed than most stories, but it is none-the-less a very full story.
This is my favorite book. There are many books that are arguable for that title, but I think this one is the one I would be most confident recommending to a friend.
There is something about Science Fiction and Fantasy writers that you don't see very much in writers of other genres- they live in their own world, or even their own universe. Herbert creates such a rich, deep, and complex universe that it is hard to believe that none of it is real. The stories are interwoven so expertly, and the cultures and history are so developed that it becomes a part of your life.
That being said - please be warned that it will take a bit of time before you become accustomed to the new language (words, sounds, culture, economy) of the book, so you might feel lost for the first few chapters. If you can just put the confusion in the back of your mind for a few chapters, you will start to put the world together and I promise it will be one of the most entertaining experiences of your life.
And, as a note to the performance of the narrators themselves, their performance was one of the best I have ever heard. It was immersive and engaging, but not overbearing nor misguided. It was, to the best of my account, the best performance I could imagine for the book.
The whole story was very interesting, and the narration was fantastic. The book builds to a huge climax at the end, and then ---SPOILER---
... well, I guess not a spoiler, because I have no idea what the end was. It was the strangest thing. It was sort of like watching most of a movie, and then walking out of the theater and asking a homeless man to tell you a story for 10 minutes, and use that as the ending of the movie. I'm not even convinced it was the same characters.
All that being said, it was still a very amusing book. I have come to terms with the ending, and decided the whole book was still worth the story I got out of it on the way to the ending.
I'm a medical student. This book is one of the most impressive, moving, and interesting stories I've ever heard - and it is written in a way that is both accurate, and accessible. If you have any interest in medicine, health, science, cancer, or learning more about your own body, this is a fantastic book.
The only thing that turns people off is that it is a LONG book, and so if you want something to listen to on a road trip, this is probably not it. Unless your road trip is around the perimeter of the US.
It does occasionally get a bit boring, but I found that it is less the fault of the book, and more the fault of attempting to listen for 10 hours in a single session. After I took a break, it always ended up being very interesting.
This is a book that I would spend a credit on every single month if I had to! This book is fantastic! I have listened to it more than 50 times. I have listened to it with friends, parents, grandparents, and small children, and they've all loved it as much as I have!
Please, please listen to this book. It is simply fantastic and you couldn't imagine a more flawless narration than the one Stephen Fry gives.
I am not sure if Audible allows direct messaging, but if it does, and you need further convincing about this book please simply message me! It would be a shame for ANYONE to not listen to this book.
Some parts of this story were very amusing, some parts were very "meh." I should note that this is probably the 4th Terry Pratchet book I've tried, and I've not really had a great time with any of them. They are all... ok. My guess is that if you like him, you will like this book a lot. If you are like me and you think he is ...ok, then you will think this book is ...ok, a lot.
Yes, because I think I may have not given it a fair shot, having expected something a bit more action-packed. It was still a great story, but I thought this was an action-scifi book, which I now do not think.
Read this book.
This book is a mandatory requirement for those who have even a touch of interest in Sci-Fi, and for those who do not - I bet you will after you read this book!
I first read this book after happenstance led me to pick it up off the floor of a Barnes and Noble, where I then proceeded to read the entire thing sitting right there in the store (sorry B&N). The book was so great I then came back the next day and bought it so that I could read it again at home. When I finally got Audible, this was (of course) something I knew I would end up buying, but I waited because I was already so familiar with the story.
The audible version is fantastic! I don't have any negative comments at all, this is just a fantastic book and a fantastic performance, and I hope that this review encourages people to give this book a shot, because it is definitely one of my favorite books!
Everyone should listen to this book. If you are already successful in your personal and professional life, or even if you don't desire to change anything, this book is worth a read/listen. Some of the imagery is a bit dated, but overall the book still is very relevant. It is a classic for a reason, and well worth the money/time.
Since I listened to it, I've made some (albeit small) changes to my life that have really made me a lot happier. I don't know that they've made me any more successful, or added to my friends/influence, but they have definitely made me happier.
It simply must be, because Tina Fey (the author and narrator) performed this book far better than I would have with my inner narrator. She is hilarious, and she really tried to put some personality into her reading of the book.
The first time I tried to listen to it, I turned it off after a few hours because she gets quite preachy in the early part of the book and that can get boring. But, I am very glad I gave it a second chance, because it is actually a short portion of the book that is that way, and the remainder of the book far more than makes up for it. In fact, after having re-listened to the preachy part, I don't think that part was all that bad either- I must've been in a mood...
