Ex-reporter Joe Winder had been working in the public relations department of a sleazy family entertainment park, The Amazing Kingdom of Thrills, when he chanced upon a news-breaking story inspired by the disappearance of two blue-tongued voles and the bizarre death of Orky, the killer whale.

I listen to the book while in the car and I am sure some people wonder why I am driving along laughing. Carl Hiaasen is a great story crafter and there is action, mystery, interesting good guys and horrible bad guys! Best of all, humor. Love it.

One late fall Sunday in southern Minnesota, a farmer brings a load of soybeans to a local grain elevator - and a young man hits him on the head with a steel bar, drops him into the grain bin, waits until he's sure he's dead, and then calls the sheriff to report the "accident." Suspicious, the sheriff calls in Virgil Flowers, who quickly breaks the kid down...and the next day the boy's found hanging in his cell. Remorse? Virgil isn't so sure....

When Nita Morales hires Elvis Cole to find her missing adult daughter, she isn’t afraid, even though she’s gotten a phone call asking for ransom. She knows it’s a fake, that her daughter is off with the guy Nita will call only “that boy,” and that they need money: "Even smart girls do stupid things when they think a boy loves them." But she is wrong....

I love Robert's Crais characters (Dave R.). It is exactly the kind of entertaining mystery and action I prefer listening to in the car as I am driving. This one didn't disappoint. My big problem is keeping track of the books I have already ready over the years.

Vikas Swarup's spectacular debut novel, the inspiration for the award-winning film, opens in a jail cell in Mumbai, where Ram Mohammad Thomas is being held after correctly answering all 12 questions on India's biggest quiz show, Who Will Win a Billion? It is hard to believe that a poor orphan who has never gone to school could win such a contest. But through a series of exhilarating tales, Ram explains to his lawyer how episodes in his life gave him the answer to each question.

When a listless office employee (the narrator) meets Tyler Durden, his life begins to take on a strange new dimension. Together they form Fight Club - a secretive underground group sponsoring bloody bare-knuckle boxing matches staged in seedy alleys, vacant warehouses, and dive-bar basements. Fight Club lets ordinary men vent their suppressed rage, and it quickly develops a fanatical following.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jim Colby?

    Jim Colby was fine.

Do you think Fight Club needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    Absolutely not.

    Any additional comments?

The literary quality of this book is probably fine. It was literary enough to catch the eye of the movies and also two of my favorite actors. I even tried to watch the movie. Not a good experience either.
I like to read/listen for pure entertainment or educational value. This book was non stop depressive violence and people debasing each other and themselves. Like violent pornography, I don't enjoy reading/listening/watching it. I did complete it because I don't like to leave a book unfinished. However the end and the "surprise" plot twist was evident long before the last page.

In 1893, the Amlingmeyer boys venture forth from the west in response to a summons from Otto's ("Big Red") publisher - they are to come to Chicago immediately, to the World's Columbian Exposition, and compete with some of the most famous detectives in the world. Set to coincide with the closing days of the first World's Fair and the publication of the story revealing the death of Sherlock Holmes, Gustav ("Old Red") will be competing for the title of World's Greatest Sleuth!

What would have made World's Greatest Sleuth! better?

Plot was so-so. Interesting background on the Chicago World's Fair. DROP the "good ole cowboy" accent for the narrating character. It became very annoying and I had to force myself to finish the book. A book has to be pretty awful for me not to finish it!

I recommend. I like stories about set in the bayou area with Cajun characters. I really like the hero who is an awesome senior citizen with aches, pains and still has the moves! I listen while driving for entertainment and this was very entertaining. I will try more Theall books.

When 14-year-old Mattie Sullivan asks Spenser to look into her mother’s murder, he’s not completely convinced by her claim that the police investigation four years ago was botched. Mattie is gruff, street-smart, and wise beyond her years, left to care for her younger siblings and an alcoholic grandmother in a dilapidated apartment in South Boston. But her need for closure and her determination to make things right hit Spenser where he lives - they’re the very characteristics he abides by.

Ace Atkins picks up the baton. I love RBP books and am happy to know we will have more.

Have you listened to any of Joe Mantegna’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

LOVE Joe Mantegna doing anything but Spenser is especially enjoyable.

"America's best novelist" (The Denver Post), two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke is renowned for his lush, suspense-charged portrayals of the Deep South – the people, the crime, the hope and despair infused in the bayou landscape. This stunning anthology takes us back to where Burke's heart and soul beat -- the steamy, seamy Gulf Coast -- in complex and fascinating tales that crackle with violence and menace, meshing his flair for gripping storytelling with his urbane writing style.

What did you like best about The Convict and Other Stories? What did you like least?

I like the full JLB novels better. The short stories were harder to follow. My bookmark was not working well on this audio and kept jumping around.
EXCEPTION: the story "Hack" made me cry. My 94 year old dad recently passed.
