As with all Lethem's books, it's not the story that entertains, it's the writing. His books are all an interesting turn of phrase.
I laughed, I cried, I saw it all coming from a mile away and yet,I was surprised.
The subject of the the Jews and WW2 is not easy to handle lightly. Yet I learned so much about people and their lives, at that time, without the sick feeling I usually get when reading about the Holocaust.
ok, maybe a bit goofy, but it's a fun listen and Hadden is such a good writer that I was willing just to enjoy.
The narration was excellent and added to the fun.
This book is both a trip to the past and to the future.
I did live during the 80's but I have never been a serious pop culture fan, so I probably missed many of the allusions. Also, I'm not a gamer, so I wasn't particularly famuliar with the setting. And yet, I totally enjoyed this book and didn't want it to end. Wil Wheaton's voice lured me in and I was hooked like a kid on video games.
Whatever it was that was going on, I didn't like it. I din't like the whiny kids or their dim, unaware mother. And when it came down to it, I didn't like the politics.
I'm sure this book has some underlaying message, but I'm not sure what it is. In spite of that, it is interesting and entertaining. Marc Aden Gray's narration is so good he made me care more for the character than I would have if I'd read it myself.
I wish the encapsulation would tell me when a book is for kids. I realize I may just be stupid, but I obviously need it spelled out. I'm wasting my money.
I love McKinty's adult books, but I would not have bought this is I had know it was for kids.
I didn't see anything to tell me this was for children, but it must be. The narration is like reading to a 3 year old and the story is nothing new.
I don't know why I hadn't read this book before. If I had, I would have anticipated this recording eagerly. The book is wonderful. Irving's masterful writing spirals around, dropping hints, showing tidbits, keeping the reader 'turning pages' in rapture.
Thought provoking and inspiring, the ideas will stay with you after the book is finished, but it is also just downright entertaining.
I think the narration is perfectly matched to the writing and makes the book all the more personal and powerful. The editing is flawless!
