Absolutely excellent from first to last. Too engrossing to listen at bedtime - it wil keep you up. I'm a big fan of Holmes in many iterations - Larry Millett and Laurie King among others, but Anthony Horowitz really captures it all - the essence of a good Holmes story - plus excellent description of place, action and character - brought leaping to life by Derek Jacobi - truly a brilliant and lush performance. Even if you are not a Holmes fan - this is a great book. I'm pretty fussy and rarely, if ever, have given such an unabashed 5 star review. This one is sooooooo worth it.
Read this book to understand better how to talk to your doctor. Read this book to give up "giving up " to " old age" There is so much you really CAN do to live a better life, and this book gives the science that explains what and why. Well worth it.
really good story and performance but Blackout ends with a cliff-hanger. All Clear, the next book picks up where Blackout left off. I would have been mightily annoyed by this if I didn't happen to have an extra credit handy and could download the next book right away. I think it is worth getting both books - but I don't think you should have to find out about the second one when the first one just stops rather than ending....
Simon Prebble is an excellent performer, but the material is just not that interesting. And having sections in Italian or French, or German does not make it more worth listening to for me. While it does suggest a couple of different possibilities, it is just kind of dull. I didn't even make it into the 3rd story. Or,was it the second. Can't remember.
I am not opposed to sex scenes in novels but this is supposed to be a Sherlock Holmes story, not Watson's lusty life. The authors detailed descriptions of the marginal and irrelevant does nothing to inspire listening even though the plot has some interest, it isnt enough to keep me. Though Mr Vance gives an excellent performance, this book is being returned.
Good performance overall. The story is the thing though- I just listened to all of the Conan Doyle Holmes stories and Mr Thomas rings true with these additional adventures. I definitely recommend.
Annoying reading style, choppy. At points I wondered if performer was severely asthmatic. Too many comma insertions in the text. Too many modern anachronisms. Plot point based on something that didn't happen for 25years after the story timeline. Then, unforgivable to me, rehash of Conan Doyle plot points and phrases. Not homages, outright copy. Glad it was extra cheap on sale.
I never paid much attention to Rob Lowe until the West Wing, in which I thought he was remarkably good. I enjoyed him in Austin Powers and of course knew about the stupid sex tape - and was kind of iffy about this book - but the reviews talked me into it - and Im glad they did. It was an interesting story about an improbable life that turned into a really decent and friendly guy. No tabloid junk here, just matter of fact and personal. I recommend it for a pleasant listen.
Well written descriptions of irrelevant story of an implied intrigue. Holmes doesn't even appear until 2/3 of the way through. Missing the essential Holmes-Russell story telling. Missing any sense of real intrigue until chapter 34 or so. Read all the other Mary Russell books but skip this one. A long way down from the emotional depth of the last 3 books. Humor lies flat because the story is so often full of pointless detail, I found myself not caring much about any of the characters or the plot. Nope, skip this one.
Melvyn Bragg is one of the actual persons that all the comedians mocking the ponderously educated English gentleman are modeling. Depending on your tastes, this book is either full of the lush and deep details and patriotic pride that feels like featherbed, or it is suffocating and tedious. The content is fascinating, but you best be patient. Give a listen to Mr. Bragg's podcast, In Our Time, and you'll get a sense of his style. He writes just as he talks. If you like his podcast, you will really like this book.
