Don't really care when these stories were written, as long as they are good...and they are. I liked some of the readers better than others but they were all good.
Sometimes I have to wonder if I am listening to the same book after reading a review that pans the narrator. I thought the reading was quite good - as was the book. Very enjoyable.
This is the best rendition I've heard of one of the best novels ever written. Wonderful!
Good old-fashioned mystery. Loved the narrator.
I have trouble understanding why people download a long book and then blast ( often unfairly as in this case ) the narrator. Samples are provided so you know what you are getting. I like to judge for myself so listened to the sample in spite of a review that had such a "blast."
I liked the sound and got the book. Moral of the story...You would not buy a car without taking a test drive. Don't get a book without listening to the sample and trust your own ears.
When I was thinking about getting this book there was only one review and it gave some good advice - Listen to the sample. I did that but came to a very different conclusion. I thought the reading was fine. Got the book and, after hearing the first few chapters I am very happy with both book and reader.
So...follow the "Listen to the sample" advice but decide for yourself. Opinions about narrators I've noticed yet again, can be widely divergent.
My students chose this version after hearing samples from all of them. ( I play parts of novels as we cover them in class. ) I was concerned that it was not quite digital quality since it was produced back in 1980. They didn't care. The voice sounded like a young man. It fit the book. The others were obviously much older. I must say that, after hearing a few chapters, I think they made the right choice. Very effective reading.
By "raw" I mean that this recording does not sound quite as polished as more recent versions. But it has a very authentic intensity in the reading that I thought was missing in the others I tried. Very easy to get caught up in this one.
Liked the fact that this version eliminated the interwoven comments that can make this hard to read - or listen to.
With most of the commentaries taken out, the actual words of the author are much easier to understand.
Many powerful lessons - for business, not just war.
