I listened to this book in my car over the course of a couple weeks and LOVED it! The narrator was easy on the ears and the content sparked a number of inspirations that I could apply to my own life and work. I enjoyed this book so much that I plan on listening to it again. IDEO must be an incredible company to work for.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold ""human error"" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I absolutely loved this book! It was riveting and a great listen! I can't imagine it would have been half the fun reading it. The narration made it come alive. The author self-published the book and subsequently it was picked up by a major publishing house who will release it in print 2014.

A mission to Mars gets aborted and the main character, Mark Watney, is left for dead. Only problem is he's not dead. Now, how does he survive until they can return and pick him up?

    Any additional comments?

If the 'f' word really bothers you then this book may need to be skipped. Other than that it's appropriate for young adults, too. Frankly I'd probably use the f word a lot too if I found myself stuck on Mars with no radio communication or way to get off the planet! LOL.

Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paul - the gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walter - environmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, total family man - she was doing her small part to build a better world.

    "Dark and dreary"
    Overall

I agree with many of the other reviewers who had a like / hate relationship with the story. The characters were unlikable and if I'd been reading the printed word there are a number of times I would have skipped ahead. But the author did a good job sucking you in. Like witnessing a car wreck you just can't look away (even if you want to). I'd compare it to Phillip Roth's American Pastoral.

If you like stories that are dark and unhappy, with tortured sad relationships, you will likely enjoy this book.

BTW, I thought the narrator did a great job reading the book and would definitely listen to other recordings!

Valentino's travels, truly Biblical in scope, bring him in contact with government soldiers, janjaweed-like militias, liberation rebels, hyenas and lions, disease and starvation, and a string of unexpected romances. Ultimately, Valentino finds safety in Kenya and, just after the millennium, is finally resettled in the United States, from where this novel is narrated.

I am so glad I listened to this book rather than reading it. The narrator was perfect! I loved how he brought the main character Valentino to life. This book is one of my top three audible.com listens. It's well worth the credit!

  • The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives

In this irreverent and illuminating audiobook, acclaimed writer and scientist Leonard Mlodinow shows us how randomness, chance, and probability reveal a tremendous amount about our daily lives, and how we misunderstand the significance of everything from a casual conversation to a major financial setback. As a result, successes and failures in life are often attributed to clear and obvious causes, when in actuality they are more profoundly influenced by chance.

I listen to books on my way to work and have enjoyed many. This one was too left brain for me. I didn't finish it. I'm sure many enjoyed it, though and liked the humor and examples the author used to illustrate the facts he was trying to convey.

McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

    Davis says: "An outstanding biography"
    "Great book"
    Overall

For anyone interested in US history this is a must read/listen. As we hear people complain about current US Presidents and Congress it was humorous to read that this same problem has been going on since the beginning! Kind of put things in perspective. My only complaint is the narrator read the story slowly. I ended up listening to it at 2x speed.

Seymour "Swede" Levov is a prosperous, hard-working family man who comes of age in America's triumphant postwar era. But when the country begins to run amok in the 1960s, Swede's perfect world crumbles.

    Thomas says: "A Masterpiece"
    "Such a sad story"
    Overall

This was my first Philip Roth book. It was slow at first and there were parts that I would have skimmed had I been reading, but it ended up being an excellent and sad story.

Swede Lavove, someone we all knew in high-school. Mr All American athlete. The one who marries the most beautiful woman and owns a successful business. The man we envied.

As the story unfolds we learn about his inner anguish and personal demons. We see the sham that ends up being his life.

An event in his life that forces him to go deep into his soul in order to find some way to make sense of something that cannot be explained.

Swede's life was not a happy one. Philip Roth gives us insights into his soul turning us into voyeurs as we listen.

In the meantime, people around him (and even he) prattle on and on about things that are of no consequence such as the intricacies of making gloves or his father's feelings toward Swede, a jew, marrying a Catholic.

This is the most real and raw book I believe I've ever read. It will stay with me for a very long time.

Dashing young Edmond Dantès has everything: a fine reputation, an appointment as captain of a ship, and the heart of a beautiful woman. But his perfect life is shattered when three jealous friends conspire to destroy him. Falsely accused of a political crime, Dantès is locked away for life in the infamous Chateau d'If prison. But it is there that Dantès learns of a vast hidden treasure.

    Prsilla says: "Really-REALLY Classic!"
    "Fantastic!"
    Overall

I highly recommend The Count of Monte Cristo! I just started a new job and it requires a 1 1/2 hour commute each day. Instead of resenting the driving time I'm finding myself enthralled and looking forward to my time in the car. Sometimes I have to sit in my car for 'just a bit longer' in order to listen to even more! The narrator is top notch and the story has really caught my interest. This is my favorite Audio Book to date.

Martin Conway is sleeping his life away, aimless and unhappy, until the boy appears in his room. He is a long-dead English boy, and he has an urgent question to ask. Martin, for his own sanity, hopes and prays it is just a dream. But then one dream becomes two, then three, then four.

    Michael says: "Call this book"
"Worth a listen!... Good family book."
    Overall

This story started a bit slow at first, but built momentum to become a very interesting story. Give it an hour and you'll be hooked til the end!

The author had a great ability to teach about human weakness, love, trust of self, a historical time in WWII history, truth, and other nice lessons.

Martin, the main character, travels back in time to London England during WWII and witnesses events that aren't well documented in modern day history. Events that have been twisted by members of his immediate community during modern times. His father is an alcoholic, his mother a doormat and his sister a strong young woman. As Martin's confidence in himself grows, those around him change for the better as well.

If Martin was my son I'd be mighty proud of him!
