  • Gateway

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Frederik Pohl
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman, Robert J. Sawyer

When prospector Bob Broadhead went out to Gateway on the Heechee spacecraft, he decided he would know which was the right mission to make him his fortune. Three missions later, now famous and permanently rich, Robinette Broadhead has to face what happened to him and what he a journey into himself as perilous and even more horrifying than the nightmare trip through the interstellar void that he drove himself to take!

Ryan says: "A human-focused SF classic"
    "Wonderful sci-fi, awful self-indulgent protagonist"

I really enjoyed the sci-fi part of the story, but the psychoanalytic exploration of the (part time) sociopathic protagnist was boring and indulgent (I guess it would have to be!?). I hope that the sequels explore more interesting, if less complex characters.

"Looking forward to July 1 !!"

So refreshing to hear/read a truly well written, well narrated fantasy book again ... (I'd begun to despair after a number of mind numbingly bad book choices.)
If you like a story that teases you along in a logical, consistent manner; characters who are larger than life, yet fallible and possessing all the weaknesses that make us human; and enough "magic" to carry you outside of your normal experience - but not so much that you breathe "wtf?" every 10 minutes.... then this is the book you want to hear/read (I did both with whispersync). Well worth the credit or dual purchase.

  • Triggers

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Robert J. Sawyer
    • Narrated By Jeff Woodman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

On the eve of a secret military operation, an assassin's bullet strikes President Seth Jerrison. He is rushed to the hospital, where surgeons struggle to save his life. At the same hospital, researcher Dr. Ranjip Singh is experimenting with a device that can erase traumatic memories. Then a terrorist bomb detonates. In the operating room, the president suffers cardiac arrest. He has a near-death experience - but the memories that flash through Jerrison's mind are not his memories.

    Ron says: "Fun Read"

This is my first Sawyer book, and I'm surprised at how disappointing it was. From the inclusion of every tiresome cliché there is in America today, to the shoddy plot lines and hollywoodesque characters (I could picture every single character's star actor analogue) there wasn't a single original or enjoyable element to the entire book. The "hard science" was totally laughable and the character development - even with the huge amount of boring memories thrown in - was ....dumb (I'm at a loss for words, sorry).
I also found the narration mediocre, though better than the writing.

  • Quicksilver: Book One of The Baroque Cycle

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Neal Stephenson
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble, Kevin Pariseau, Neal Stephenson

In which Daniel Waterhouse, fearless thinker and courageous Puritan, pursues knowledge in the company of the greatest minds of Baroque-era Europe -- in a chaotic world where reason wars with the bloody ambitions of the mighty, and where catastrophe, natural or otherwise, can alter the political landscape overnight.

David says: "Be aware of what you're getting into"
    "Historical fiction at its best"

Very happy to see this trilogy done in the unabridged format, even if it means that Audible gets to sell it as an "octalogy". (I guess LotR will be sold as a hexalogy whenever they finally buy rights to it)
    Excellent narration t'boot.

Tom says: "Excellent Story, Distracting Sound Engineering"

Good premise for a story. Good character mix. Bad formulaic storyline. Absolutely disgusting narration - wettest mouth in the business

  • The God Engines

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs and 15 mins)
    • By John Scalzi
    • Narrated By Christopher Lane
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Captain Ean Tephe is a man of faith, whose allegiance to his lord and to his ship is uncontested. The Bishopry Militant knows this — and so, when it needs a ship and crew to undertake a secret, sacred mission to a hidden land, Tephe is the captain to whom the task is given....

    L. A. Loman says: "I love Scalzi's writing but not this book"
    "Crisis of Faith"

This is a novelette that could easily have been a novel or even another Scalzi series. It's like an introduction to a very interesting alternate universe. Much more serious and solid than Scalzi's other titles available through Audible imo. Christoper Lanes narration is unerring throughout and fits the tone of the story well. My only negative criticism has to do with its rather abrupt and rushed ending.

    • By George Mann
    • Narrated By Simon Taylor

Welcome to the bizarre and dangerous world of Victorian London, a city teetering on the edge of revolution. Its people are ushering in a new era of technology, dazzled each day by unfamiliar inventions. Airships soar in the skies over the city, while ground trains rumble through the streets and clockwork automatons are programmed to carry out menial tasks in the offices of lawyers, policemen, and journalists.

Doug says: "nowhere near as bad as reviewed"
    "B Rate... if that"

I wish I had waited for Diego's review before buying - that's right - BUYING this piece of crud.
Like a terrible movie script, with awful narration and everything possible stereotyped - I'm disgusted with the publisher's synopsis and will never trust one again. Avoid this book.
