Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told....

    Overall

As a female in leadership (though not nearly as funny and not at all as famous as Tina) I appreciated hearing from Tina Fey on the development of her career. Of course the book makes you laugh out loud, but she shares her life lessons in a charming and candid way that adds depth and poignancy. It was a treat to listen to the Sarah Palin/Hillary Clinton skit again and to be let in on the behind the scenes development of Tina's Palin persona (not nearly as sinister as some might imagine!). I've determined that the rules for improv make great rules for life... never shut down another person's contribution... always add to it. I'm glad I listened.

In this best-selling novel, Patrick D. Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need.

Part historical fiction, part family saga, part pioneer story with real cowboys and Native Americans - if you live in Florida, have visited Florida, or dream of doing either, you should read this story. It is a riveting trip through time and the taming and plundering of this exotic place called Florida. It is hard for most of us who see the land of strip malls and traffic jams to imagine the Florida wilderness. This book will help you imagine and as the title suggests... remember.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Call Me Irresistible is the book Susan Elizabeth Phillips's readers have long awaited. Ted, better known as "little Teddy," the nine-year-old heartbreak kid from Phillips's first best seller, Fancy Pants, and as "young Teddy," the hunky new college graduate in Lady Be Good, is all grown up now—along with Lucy from First Lady and Meg from What I Did for Love. They're ready to take center stage in a saucy, funny, and highly addictive tale fans will love.

    Overall

I enjoyed Shannon Cochran's various Texas accents. Susan Phillips' cast of characters were entertaining. If you liked the TV show Dallas, you'll like this. Won't change your life, but won't bring you down while you're laying by the pool.

Redemption isn't a word Jim Heron knows much about - his specialty is revenge, and to him, sin is all relative. But everything changes when he becomes a fallen angel and is charged with saving the souls of seven people from the seven deadly sins. Vin diPietro long ago sold his soul to his business, and he's good with that - until fate intervenes in the form of a tough-talking Harley-riding, self-professed savior.

    Robbie says: "Enjoyable read"
"I stayed with it to the end"
    Overall

I stayed with it to the end, but I'm a bit ashamed to say so. Lots of improbable overcharged sex and crazy fantasy religious/demonic interactions. If you're looking for escapism, this one will do it.

After being dumped by his longtime girlfriend, 28-year-old Justin Halpern found himself living at home with his 73-year-old dad. Sam Halpern, who is “like Socrates, but angrier, and with worse hair,” has never minced words, and when Justin moved back home, he began to record all the ridiculous things his dad said to him.

There are others of us who have larger than life fathers who say (said) crazy things, but Sean's capturing of his Dad's musings is just plan hilarious... and also very sweet. Take away message... get to know your Dad. There might be more to him than you realized.

  • Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography

A teen idol at 15, an international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences. Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.

    N. Belle says: "Great Book and Great Story"
"More to Rob Lowe than I might have imagined"
    Overall

I'm not sure why I downloaded Rob Lowe's book initially. I have never particularly been a fan. I wasn't not a fan, but I guess I figured he was another shallow, pretty faced aging kid actor.

Whatever struck me, I'm glad I listened to this book. In it Rob talks about the stress and thrill of being hounded by hoards of adoring fans and admits that while he loves people, the mindless mob can steal your soul (not a quote, but my summation). However, his true affection and admiration for the interesting cast of characters who have populated his life make him seem like a deeply caring, thinking, fun person I would enjoy chatting with. And I feel like I had the opportunity to do so.

I hope he wasn't just acting this part... I believed him. If you're a Rob fan, you must read this book. If you're not, but you have at least a mild interest in the who he is a a human being, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Hey Rob, thanks for sharing.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
"The best in a long long time"
    Overall

I was touched, moved, entertained, enthralled with this book I've been tempted to buy it for every person I know (instead, I'll highly recommend it to everyone I know!). I laughed out loud (mostly at Minnie), seethed with anger(mostly at Hillie), was uplifted by Abelene's faith and courage, and encouraged by Eugenia's self-discovery. I lived with these characters and now I miss them terribly!

Cy Judge says: "A great audio book"
    "Dirk Struen Rocks"
    Overall

I read this book along with others by Clavell a long time ago. Listening to John Lee narrate this epic story was fascinating. I loved every minute of it -- even the ending. Although, I felt sad to leave all of the characters -- you know that empty feeling when a great story ends. This book embodies all of the reasons we spend time with great fiction. For those moments I was listening, I was transported to another time and place.
