  • America's Secret War: Inside the Struggle Between the United States and Its Enemies

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By George Friedman
    • Narrated By Brian Emerson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Dubbed by Barron's as "The Shadow CIA", Stratfor, George Friedman's global intelligence company, has provided analysis to Fortune 500 companies, news outlets, and even the U.S. government. Now Friedman delivers the geopolitical story that the mainstream media has been unable to uncover, the startling truth behind America's foreign policy and war effort in Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond.

    David says: "The Best"
    "Objective, watch for code words"

If you have an axe to grind with either political persuasion in the War on Terror then you are bound to be tweaked at some point, but in a refreshing way. The author does a great job in taking an objective approach and repeatedly reminds us that nations, states and individuals can most certainly be predicted to act in a way that best serves their own self-interests. Impressive command of intelligence, but some holes are evident when you hear code phrases like ?for some strange reason? or ?inexplicably?. Some of those gaps in Stratfor?s intelligence are filled with reading of other materials, particularly from sources who were actually involved with the campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. When you finish this selection, you?re going to have a more global view on the situation.

  • By Order of the President

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By W. E. B. Griffin
    • Narrated By Dennis Boutsikaris

Over the years, W.E.B. Griffin's stories of the military and police, told with crackling realism and rich characters, have won him millions of fans and acclaim as "the dean of the American war adventure" (Publishers Weekly). Now he vaults into the present day with a series as exciting as anything he has ever written.

    Meyer says: "Great Griffin!!"
    "Great characters"

I've seen the Griffin books for years, but never got around to reading them, so I was excited to see that he finally is featured on Audible. He seems to be able to develop great characters with a lot of depth and interesting backgrounds. Maybe it's the abridgement here, but I would have to agree with the earlier reviewer that the story was pretty predictable.

  • Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By John McCain, Mark Salter
    • Narrated By Dan Cashman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"Courage," Winston Churchill explained, is "the first of human qualities...because it guarantees all the others." As a naval officer, P.O.W., and one of America's most admired political leaders, John McCain has seen countless acts of bravery and self-sacrifice. Now, in this inspiring meditation on courage, he shares his most cherished stories of ordinary individuals who have risked everything to defend the people and principles they hold most dear.

Brad says: "Great Read with no Politics"
    "Great Read with no Politics"

If you are worried that this selection is going to generate into some sort of political diatribe or some thinly disguised effort by McCain to take on the mantle of a courageous person, you can rest easy.

McCain attacks the subject matter in a straightforward manner in a way that makes you believe that he, himself, has asked the very same questions about courage and has searched often and deep for the answers.

The real stories regarding heroic and courageous performance by others are gripping and were easily the highlight of the book for me.

  • The Teeth of the Tiger

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Tom Clancy
    • Narrated By Stephen Hoye
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Charged with spotting terrorist threats, the top-secret "Campus" has its hands full when Middle East thugs and Colombian drug lords join forces. New Campus recruits include Jack Ryan Jr., son of master spy John Patrick Ryan, now President.

    John says: "NOT CLANCY'S BEST"
    "Outside of Core Competence"

I read everyone's reviews here and I thought, "It's Tom Clancy, it can't be that bad".

Ouch. For the legions of Clancy fans who enjoy the detailed research that goes into his other titles, this one will leave you flat.

As another reviewer mentioned, what was Clancy thinking having a former president's son leaping into the spook world? Like no one knows who Jack Jr. is? Like his Secret Service contingent is going to let Jack Jr. travel by himself to Europe to chase terrorists? Like "People" magazine wouldn't be following him around to have him on the cover of it's "Sexiest Man of the Year" issue?

And attention to tradecraft is comical. He has identical twins (who are rookies in the business) doing hits on terrorists in Europe...interesting, but don't you think they would stick out? Plus they do their hit the same way on three separate people in the span of a few you think any intelligence agency or police agency would not notice? He has Jack Jr. and the twins actually in the hotel room right next to one of their targets as the three casually discuss their plans.

Still, the concept of a self-funded anti-terrorist organization is intriguing and plausible the way he has it set up.

Overall, entertaining, but not up to the usual stuff.
