Accountant turned professional monster hunter, Owen Zastava Pitt, managed to stop the nefarious Old Ones' invasion plans last year, but as a result made an enemy out of one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Now an evil death cult known as the Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition wants to capture Owen in order to gain the favor of the great Old Ones.

Correia is a little weak on the female characters but I think that may be part of his charm. He may identifiy so much with Owen, or Owen with him, that he has a hard time putting the mechanics of the male/female romantic relationship into words.

I don't think it matters much as the story moves along at such a heady clip that there may not be time for such fripperies, anyway.

I don't know much about guns (though I have one and there are more around) other than the point and shoot aspect which seems to me the critical bit but I still love the professional talk about the weapons buried in the books. My husband does understand all the nomenclature did understand and probably walked away with an even better appreciation. I was gratified that he is laughing at all the points I did.

Corriea has the gift of a very pleasant writing voice, sort of invites you to keep listening, invites you to sympathize with the characters - and, invariably, I do.

  • The Accidental Superpower: The Next Generation of American Preeminence and the Coming Global Disorder

In The Accidental Superpower, international strategist Peter Zeihan examines how geography, combined with demography and energy independence, will pave the way for one of the great turning points in history, and one in which America reasserts its global dominance. No other country has a greater network of internal waterways, a greater command of deepwater navigation, or a firmer hold on industrialization technologies than America.

Would you listen to The Accidental Superpower again? Why?

I am listening to it again, to fully absorb it.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

This book is about the factors nations and peoples MUST deal with or work around - or benefit from enormously. The things apart from cultural work ethic or government intervention; things involving geography. If there is no river traffic possible, that makes a difference. If there is no arable land, that means no food. Fascinating read.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I simply could not get into it, could not buy the premise. It never became real enough for me to care. I probably listened to a third of it.

Back on the job after an involuntary leave of absence, LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch is ready for a challenge. But his first case is a little more than he bargained for. It starts with the body of a Hollywood producer in the trunk of a Rolls-Royce, shot twice in the head at close range - what looks like "trunk music", a Mafia hit.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes. A better editor perhaps. There were glaring weak points I would've like it better without.

Would you be willing to try another book from Michael Connelly? Why or why not?

Of course. I like his work generally.

    Any additional comments?

Harry is a little bit forced. If you like your cops jaded and willing to rough up suspects without remorse to get results, Harry is your man. It bothered me that when he is suspected of planting evidence everyone was so surprised, though. I think now my difficulty finishing this one is the rampant corruption everywhere. I think I fear reality is really like this and it breaks my heart.

He was the last great hero of his generation. Velma Martinez - Velveteen - had never intended to be a great hero, but she was out of choices. "Hello, Jolly Roger." "Hello, bunny-eared girl who's taken over my ship. Have you come to collect the bounty on my head?" "I've come because Dame Fortuna told me how to find you, and we need your help." Velveteen crossed her arms. "The Super Patriots are corrupt, and I think Marketing is evil, and they have my best friend, and we want her back."

Would you try another book from Seanan McGuire and/or Allison McLemore?

    Maybe.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It felt incomplete though I understood the reasoning.

    Any additional comments?

The concept was still engaging enough. There were a couple of instances where the logic failed which always grates on me. You would think that in fantasy one would be more open to random illogic but not for me. You pick the rules but you gotta play by them consistently.

"How dare you? I never asked for you to hunt me down!" No, Velma Martinez hadn't. But when you had once been Velveteen, child super-heroine and one of The Junior Super Patriots, West Coast Division, you were never going to be free, even if your only power was to bring toys to life. The Marketing Department would be sure of that.

In this sequel to Dawn, Lilith Iyapo has given birth to what looks like a normal human boy named Akin. But Akin actually has five parents: a male and female human, a male and female Oankali, and a sexless Ooloi. The Oankali and Ooloi are part of an alien race that rescued humanity from a devastating nuclear war, but the price they exact is a high one the aliens are compelled to genetically merge their species with other races, drastically altering both in the process.

What made the experience of listening to Adulthood Rites the most enjoyable?

Better than Dawn. The story gets even better with Imago and I can't wait until it appears on Audible. Akins story is perfectly outrageous and just as plausible.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Akin of course. There is something appealing about babies, even alien ones.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Pretty much

    Love this author.

In a world devastated by nuclear war with humanity on the edge of extinction, aliens finally make contact. They rescue those humans they can, keeping most survivors in suspended animation while the aliens begin the slow process of rehabilitating the planet. When Lilith Iyapo is "awakened", she finds that she has been chosen to revive her fellow humans in small groups by first preparing them to meet the utterly terrifying aliens, then training them to survive on the wilderness that the planet has become. But the aliens cannot help humanity without altering it forever.

What did you love best about Dawn?

It's purely original. Alien contact at its most intimate and somehow believable.

What about Aldrich Barrett’s performance did you like?

I don't notice the narrator unless they are bad.

    Any additional comments?

This series is an old favorite of mine, glad it's finally on audible.

Teri and Phil had never needed their own personal god. But when Phil is passed up for a promotion - again - it's time to take matters into their own hands. And look online. Choosing a god isn't as simple as you would think. There are too many choices; and they often have very hefty prices for their eternal devotion: blood, money, sacrifices, and vows of chastity. But then they find Luka, raccoon god of prosperity. All he wants is a small cut of their good fortune. Oh - and to crash on their couch for a few days.

    probably
