  • The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods

The Big Miss is Hank Haney's candid and surprisingly insightful account of his tumultuous six-year journey with Tiger Woods, during which the supremely gifted golfer collected six major championships and rewrote golf history. Hank was one of the very few people allowed behind the curtain. He was with Tiger 110 days a year, spoke to him over 200 days a year, and stayed at his home up to 30 days a year, observing him in nearly every circumstance....

I know a lot of people have said that Haney violated some "bond" by writing this book; I think that he is a grown man and so is Tiger. If Tiger really wants to have privacy then that should be spelled out in his contracts with people or he should treat people with respect. I don't know Tiger but I tend to believe how Haney has portrayed him. Haney doesn't malign his character nor is he vindictive. I believe that this is how their relationship was and that is all. I really didn't have a solid opinion about Tiger one way or another although I've heard less than flattering stories about him from people who've had encounters with him at tournaments. After reading this book I still don't have strong feelings about him one way or another. I just don't care about him as a golfer or a person. I believe he has done some great things on the course but I truly believe that it is over for him as a golfer. He will be remembered as a golfer who could have been the best ever.
The book was engaging and I enjoyed the behind the scenes around the life of a pro golfer. It was worth the read.

All is not well in Margrave, Georgia. The sleepy, forgotten town hasn't seen a crime in decades, but within the span of three days it witnesses events that leave everyone stunned. An unidentified man is found beaten and shot to death on a lonely country road.

Love the first of the Jack Reacher series of books. In a lot of ways it is still my favorite. He is the best out there unfortunately Child sometimes puts out some mediocre books in this series. I love the character and everything. You must remember that this isn't War and Peace and shouldn't be judged as if it was. You get a great suspenseful story with some twists along the way. It is laughable that Cruise played Reacher on the big screen.

  • In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

This author took what had to be an exciting time in Germany and reduced it to boredom. I thought that this book might shed some light on every day life during this time, instead it was a book about a ill-suited diplomat who was appointed by a distracted president and his boring time in Berlin. The only intrigue (if you can call it such) was his daughter's lack of morality and insistence on bedding just about everyone she came into contact with. There was no suspense, no great turning point for the family but just a boring account of probably the only boring diplomat in the world. The Night of Long Knives is reduced to a lackadaisical happening. I've heard good things about Larson. I had heard him compared to Hillenbrand; it isn't a fair comparison as he isn't in the same league. I hope this isn't his best work but based on this I won't be reading anything else written by Larson.

Born in shadow and kept from heads of state, there are some missions so deadly, so sensitive, that they simply don't exist. so deadly, so sensitive, that they simply don't exist. When one such mission goes horribly wrong, a wave of dramatic terrorist attacks is set in motion. Their goal: the complete and total collapse of the United States. With the CIA's intelligence abilities hobbled, former Navy SEAL Team 6 member turned covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath launches an audacious plan to infiltrate the terrorists' network and prevent one of the biggest threats the U.S. has ever faced.

Another reviewer states that this is Brad Thor's best book, if this is true then I don't know how his previous books were published. The plot is decent but the details are awful. There is virtually no character development and as such I didn't care much about them. The story jumps from place to place into one two distinct story arcs and neither one is handled very well. It is almost like he has a good idea for a book but doesn't know how to flesh it out. There are nuggets throughout the book that are decent but decent doesn't cut it. I really regret purchasing this book. The only bright spot was the narration which was great. I urge you to buy a different book, don't waste money on this tripe.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

The story is disturbing on many levels but that is war. I enjoyed the narrator, one of the best I've listened to. This is a little known story about world war 2 which every American should know.
