"Slow and Solid"
I read a number of reviews that talked about getting through the first 8 hours of the book. This was not my impression. I thought the whole book was very well written, interesting, and rewarding. However, the pacing is slow throughout its entirety. This is not a criticism but it is a warning. If you are looking for fast paced adventure, this book will not please you. If you are looking for a very well written book with interesting characters and an unusual theme, you will be very happy with this listen.
"Good, not great"
A solid story with fun characters. It does not rival Tolkien, nor more recently, Rothfuss, but then nothing does.
"A Must Listen"
The story is interesting and fun. The performance, however, is wonderful. Katherine Kellgran makes this book a great listen.
"Brilliant brilliant brilliant"
Not only does Marlantes caputre the horror of war as well as the humanity but every single character is infused with multiple shades of gray.
Pincho's performance was incredible. He was able to move seamlessly between multiple accents and narration.
"Very very very good"
I'm not sure. I haven't read the book and don't intend to now.
The characters are fantastic. Rothfuss does a great job creating complex characters. Few things are more irritating in stories than cookie cutter characters. Rothfuss works to create characters that have flaws as well as grace and strengths as well as weaknesses.
I listened to the first book in this series as well and I think that Podehl does a fine job in all of the roles. While his character's accents are reminiscent of accents around our globe, Podehl does a good job using different dialects for all of the different realms. This helps the listener feel the size of Rothfuss' world.
"It only gets better"
While part one is slow and the narration is a little difficult to get into, by the end of part 3 you can't believe you forgot to download part 4 and you are kicking yourself because you have to wait until you can get back home to listen.
"Narration"
Listen to the Narration before you purchase this book. The story might have been good but I could not get over how poor the narration was.
