Years ago I read this series and loved it. The audio version has been a disappointment. I don't care for the reader.

In which Daniel Waterhouse, fearless thinker and courageous Puritan, pursues knowledge in the company of the greatest minds of Baroque-era Europe -- in a chaotic world where reason wars with the bloody ambitions of the mighty, and where catastrophe, natural or otherwise, can alter the political landscape overnight.

I had been looking for a good historical fiction when I ran across this read. I had such high hopes for this series. However, after listening several hours I finally just gave up waiting for it to become interesting. That will teach me to wait for reviews before wasting credits.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

    CynNC says: "Captivating"

The characters absolutely come to life, the story is engaging, and the reader is the best I have ever listened to, I loved this audio!

Hoping to improve their social standing, May and Pearl's parents arrange for their daughters to "Gold Mountain men" who have come from Los Angeles to find brides. But when the sisters leave China and arrive at Angel's Island (the Ellis Island of the West, where they are detained, interrogated, and humiliated for months) they feel the harsh reality of leaving home. And when May discovers she's pregnant, the situation becomes even more desperate. The sisters make a pact that no one can ever know.

Frances says: "Touching, sad, and enjoyable"
    "Shanghai Girls"
    Overall

I am hoping this is a historic fiction because the history of China has been very interesting and I'm hopeful that it is accurate. The story is also interesting to me and I find myself looking for opportunities to listen as much as possible.

  • The Graveyard Book

Why we think it’s a great listen: Gaiman’s not just an award-winning author, but a narrator who earns rave reviews – and fields requests from other authors to perform their books, too! Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

Guillermo says: "Masterful Fantasy for the Jaded Heart"
    "The Graveyard Book"
    Overall

I was very impressed, the narrator brought the story to life, made it very worth listening to.
