  • How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character

    Story
    (142)

The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: Success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues for a very different understanding of what makes a successful child. Drawing on groundbreaking research in neuroscience, economics, and psychology, Tough shows that the qualities that matter most have less to do with IQ and more to do with character: skills like grit, curiosity, conscientiousness, and optimism.

What did you like best about How Children Succeed? What did you like least?

Best - focusing on what people can do in regards to teaching character development in schools
Least - don't go off on tangents. Are we focusing on character development, or poverty?

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The case studies were good but what can we learn from them? Seemed more like storytelling.

What three words best describe Dan John Miller’s voice?

Stop. Mimicking. Characters. He would use a different voice for the students he talked about which was extremely distracting.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I wouldn't mind a documentary version of this because of how many different stories there were.

    Any additional comments?

Overall a bit disappointed in the book. I suggest getting the 30 minute summary

The Thank You Economy is about something big, something greater than any single revolutionary platform. It isn't some abstract concept or wacky business strategy—it's real, and every one of us is doing business in it every day, whether we choose to recognize it or not. It's the way we communicate, the way we buy and sell, the way businesses and consumers interact online and offline.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Thank You Economy to be better than the print version?

Yes only because you truly hear the author's enthusiasm. I think hearing his voice made me like the book even more. It also helped that he would go "off script" sometimes.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

I loved when he analyzed the Old Spice social media campaign and where they succeeded and where they dropped the ball. I thought I was the only one who noticed.

What about Gary Vaynerchuk’s performance did you like?

Enthusiastic, unabridged yet had some extra add-ins every now & then.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I chuckled a few times, but no "extreme" reaction.

    Any additional comments?

Really solid book with great case studies.

Successful couples know that harmony and happiness in marriage are not achieved by love alone. There is the other side of the Ephesians 5:33 equation - respect. Yes, a wife needs love. But a husband needs respect. Based on extensive biblical and scientific research, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs reveals the secret to couples meeting each other's deepest needs: Without love she reacts without respect, and without respect he reacts without love and a destructive, vicious cycle begins.

What did you love best about Love & Respect?

There were clear sections for husbands and wives specifically and how each could show their partner how they love and/or respect them.

What did you like best about this story?

It provided a lot of examples from real couples.

What does Emerson Eggerichs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It was nice to hear the actual author reading his own work, so I didn't have to guess where emphasis should have been added.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't realize it was the abridged version, so reading along to the Kindle book was hard (I'd have to stop for sections the author skipped over). Would love the unabridged version and for it to be Whisper-Sync ready.

Where does Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find - And Keep - Love rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

A very good book about the insight of relationships. Top 10%.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't remember the names, but one woman left her long time boyfriend after having enough of their emotionally abusive relationship. She went on to marry someone who was secure. Her story stuck out because of how much she went through and how long she stayed, but she was still able to find true love.

Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?
