"The King of the Golden River" is the magical story of a boy named Gluck, his evil brothers, and a dangerous quest to find treasure lurking in the Golden River. It is a classic tale and the only fairy tale the famous English author and critic ever wrote. It could also be classified as a fable or parable since it it explains "how things came to be".

Never knew Ruskin wrote this sort of thing.
Great story - well done by the two narrators.

"Goody Two Shoes", published by an anonymous author in 1765, has long been one of the most popular children's stories ever written. It is the kind of story your grandmother might have told, and its message of optimism, bravery, and the rewards of honestyare giving it new popularity today.

from today's cynicism. Mys kids loved it!

Dick Whittington is a character in a British folklore, very loosely based on Richard Whittington, a medieval merchant as well as Lord Mayor of London and a Member of Parliament. In this traditional story, Dick, a boy from a poor family, sets out for London to make his fortune, accompanied by his cat. They have a number of remarkable adventures along the way.

Willa Cather is considered to be one of the best chroniclers of pioneer life in the 20th century. She had a long and distinguished career writing essays, poems, short stories, and novels. This story is a powerful example of a frequent theme: the haunting, sometimes painful, contrast between city and country life.

In "The Invisible Man", a murderer manages to get in and out of a house, even though it is under constant observation. In some ways, the story parallels Poe's "The Purloined Letter" but adds its own unique touches, particularly in the character and methods of priest-sleuth Father Brown.

I teach a course on detective fiction in high school. This story was in the curriculum so I decided to play it in class and stop and discuss if every 10 or 15 minutes. The kids loved it! It made an incredible difference from having them read it out loud or assigning it for homework and led to two great classes and some great discussion and writing.

The Well of the World's End is a Scottish fairy tale, from the Lowlands, collected by Joseph Jacobs in English Fairy Tales. In the story, a girl's mother died, and her father remarried. Her stepmother abused her, made her do all the housework, and finally decided to be rid of her. How the girl, with the help of a magic frog, outwitted the stepmother is the gist of the story.

This is the timeless tale of Dorothy and her friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion, in the enchanting land of OZ. Those who have only seen the movie are in for a real treat, as much of the book did not make it into the classic 1939 film.

Wonderful story...very profound and very well read. However I have to question the suggested age range. I would think this would be more a middle school to adult story. I just don't think really young kids would get it.
