I suspect that this book delivers exactly what the author intended - a backdrop of a banal, empty lifestyle that I found horrific in itself, contrasted with graphic sex and violence. I appreciate my life and values more for having listened. But I can't take any more. You might laugh to know I haven't heard Bateman kill anyone--I keep falling asleep, thankfully not in the car. Today I woke when I think a murder was in the making and found I just didn't want to hear it. I was plenty ready to have Bateman kill one of his vapid acquaintances or dates, but not this stranger and dog. I may or may not listen to more. I may try the written version. Kudos to the author for creating a powerful experience--but what I've picked up so far is enough for me.
A gripping and very satisfying end to the trilogy with great narration. Newcomers, please read the books in order. Lisbeth Salander remains one of the most intriguing literary characters I've met. As others have said, I'm saddened that this very talented author has passed on.
It looks like you either love or hate this book, and I am one who loved it. I purchased it because I expected to read an interesting cat and mouse game between two devious people. It is not. As someone already mentioned, this is a character study and quite a bit about redemption and whether one can atone for or outrun the past. I will not tell you whether the answer is yes or no, but I will tell you I cared deeply about the characters and how the story was going to turn out at several points along the way and barely restrained myself from fast forwarding to find out. You may call some aspects of the story line predictable, but I found the resolution completely satisfying. I highly recommend this book.
I don't typically write reviews, but I think this is the first audiobook I've had serious problems putting down. During the second half I found myself listening more than just my commute time, replacing TV, staying up late primarily to listen, even bringing the ipod to bed and falling asleep to it, and in the end plugging in while getting ready for work in the morning (a definite first). I truly cared about every main character, and Kate Reading's marvelous narration undoubtedly contributed to this. There's some technology described that may strain your belief, but at the core this book is about personal relationships and triumph over the most trying and unfortunate circumstances. In that area the book soars. From the range of reviews it looks like you either love this book or hate it. I'm one who loved it. It will have a permanent place in my library.
Wow, so many one star reviews. I suspect you either sit back and enjoy the ride or you hate the book. After a slow start I enjoyed the narration so much that it didn't matter a whit if I could guess where the story would head next, and there were plenty of twists I didn't see. I especially enjoyed every second this protagonist matched wits with an eight year old boy. I will definitely seek more from this author.
Fascinating blend of past and present. As another reviewer said, this book was not what I expected. I was hooked on the insights into medical history, and the romance didn't hurt either. Well read and enjoyable.
If not my favorite audio book, this one is close. I've replayed it several times already. Not realizing this was the second of a trilogy, I listened to Edenborn before Idlewild and can vouch for the story standing on its own. The narrators are all wonderful, but I was especially taken with Jenna Lamia's charming (at first) and believable portrayal of the teen-aged Penny. Having multiple narrators to match the four storytellers really brought something to the listening experience and I do not believe I would have enjoyed reading this book half as much as hearing it (and I don't think that about many books). In any case, the book was thought-provoking and I cared deeply about its characters. Can't wait for Everfree.
I loved this book. The narrator was perfect--while this is primarily a serious tale it has comic relief that is about the funniest I have ever listened to. This is one of the few audiobooks I've been compelled to pass to someone else as a gift. This story might just be better read to than read.
