  • The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume II, Fredericksburg to Meridian

    • UNABRIDGED (47 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Shelby Foote
    • Narrated By Grover Gardner, Ken Burns
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

This volume is dominated by the almost continual confrontation of great armies. For the fourth time, the Army of the Potomac (now under the control of Burnside) attempts to take Richmond, resulting in the bloodbath at Fredericksburg. Then Joe Hooker tries again, only to be repulsed at Chancellorsville as Stonewall Jackson turns his flank, a bitter victory for the South, paid for by the death of Lee's foremost lieutenant.

Christopher Morton says: "The Best of the Three Volumes"
    "Great Series"

Being a Civil War history buff, I love the way Mr. Foote works in all the anecdotes of military and civilian life throughout the telling of the story. The extra details about a person's habits as well as what was happening in other theatres of the war at the same time tie the story of the war together in a way that I have not seen before. The story surrounding the loss of Stonewall Jackson, as well as J.E.B. Stuart's problematic quest for glory and how those two missing commanders allowed Lee to blunder into the Federals at Gettyburg (in a fight over some shoes!) is so well told that I have listened to it a number of times. Highly recommended!

  • The Lost Fleet: Dauntless

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Jack Campbell
    • Narrated By Christian Rummel, Jack Campbell
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Captain John "Black Jack" Geary's legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic "last stand" in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance's one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic "Black Jack" legend.

Justin says: "Kinda boring, mostly tedious, and frustrating"
"The definition of a great space series!"
Where does The Lost Fleet: Dauntless rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a great series. The battles take a more realistic approach to dealing with vast distances in space that I find fascinating. Great Characters too - realistic, fallible...

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lost Fleet: Dauntless?

Using the Jump Point to jump away from Alliance Space

Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell – was your favorite?

    Jack Geary

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, absolutely. A great book for a road trip! Also one that, if you can't listen to it in one go, keeps your mind drifting back to it wondering what will happen next...

    Any additional comments?

Great start to a series. I look forward to where it will lead!

  • The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
    • Narrated By Charlton Griffin

First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. These are great old detective stories. What's not to like? ;-)

Which character ??? as performed by Charlton Griffin ??? was your favorite?

Holmes' intent, direct manner of speaking surprised me at first, but perfectly fit his character.

    Any additional comments?

I have loved Holmes since I was a kid, and hearing these stories again is just fabulous.

  • The Way of Kings: Book One of The Stormlight Archive

    • UNABRIDGED (45 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Brandon Sanderson
    • Narrated By Kate Reading, Michael Kramer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Katy Crumpton says: "Very enjoyable (but a slight warning)"

Still working my way through it. It's a very well thought out world, with stories told from a variety of perspectives. I really like the way Brandon builds the world as he tells the story, and I am very much looking forward to the rest of this book as well as the future volumes in this series. It's the start of a 10 book epic story. I would *expect* there to be a bit more description getting things started! Love the detail though. Keep up the good work, Mr. Sanderson!

  • Torpedo: A Surface Warfare Thriller

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By Jeff Edwards
    • Narrated By Tom Weiner

An accident at a German nuclear plant, an illegal arms deal, and a biological warfare attack on the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., combine to ignite an international crisis that threatens to draw Western Europe, the Middle East, and the United States into all-out war.

    Ron says: "Good Action Thriller"
    "Good Naval Thriller"

If you liked Red Storm Rising, Red Phoenix, Hunt for Red October, etc... You will probably enjoy this. I liked the character development, felt the story moves right along and found the book an enjoyable listen while I did my commute.

  • Liars & Thieves

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Stephen Coonts
    • Narrated By Guerin Barry
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Tommy Carmellini is sent to post guard duty at a farmhouse in Virginia's remote Blue Ridge Mountains, where top government operatives are debriefing a star defector: the ultimate KGB insider, a man with records on every operation and every dirty trick the shadowy intelligence agency has ever run, from Lenin to Putin.

Andrew Stone says: "Fast Paced - Good Read!"
    "Great listen"

I admit that I had no clue where this story was going. I thought the narrator did a great job, and the story itself moved along nicely.
