While I found the book interesting there seemed to be a glossing over of the areas I thought would be the main basis of the book. for example the roe v wade decision is only spoken of briefly after discussion of how the coffee breaks were really good.
This was a really interesting story, with particular reference to the relationship between the different presidents up to and including Bill Clinton.
the relationship between the different men was both very enjoyable and also enlightening. this is also the case when comparing the public face of the different presidents and the person who they really are.
The story made me also think about the different relationships that have existed between presidents and their vice presidents - that was not covered, unless the vice president went on to become president - and only then it was superficial.
It is obviously very difficult to write about the Obama administration and it's relationship with the past presidents, including the potential role they have played in getting votes in the senate and house for raising the debt ceiling etc. When that is able to be written I will certainly spend a credit on that too.
The story was a really interesting look at the past year or so in the house of republics in America, and in particular what effect the tea party has had on the ability of the chamber to get work done.
It reminded me a lot of the a party which sprung up in Australia (Pauline Hanson's one nation) which burned brightly for about 3 years and died a horrible death as people worked out that being uncompromising and sitting on one extreme of the political swing does not work.
The only thing that is slightly off putting are the character voices done by Holter Graham - he did not Nancy P.elosi down at all 8though it was fun to listen to him trying).
All in all It is well worth the listen.
After seeing the movie a number of times I thought I knew the story of the dam busters. But James Holland's story brought to life both the story behind those that flew the missions (including people who were integral but not part of the movie) but also the story behind the making of the bombs and the people who made it possible.
The story is both very entertaining and educational.
This book gives a different take on the d day landings. Using interviews and letter etc it tells the story from the thoughts and feelings of those involved. A very good listen.
This is a fascinating book, though it may not be a unbiased account of his life it is none the less well worth a listen. hope part 2 is added soon.
This book is not a nonfiction book. I have not listened to it past the first 20 minutes as it was not what I purchased. It should be moved to the fiction section
I really enjoyed the story. Both from the point of view of the historical information and the personal story of the author. The performance however grated on me....a lot. The reader sounded like he was putting on a false posh accent. The story was really good if you can get past the performance.
This book was very interesting at times, but I found it difficult to work out the time frame spoken about at times. Giving some outside reference such as politics, how the internet was progressing etc would have been helpful. It would be good to lay a time frame as a scaffold to build the story on.
First things first - if you realise that this is not a definitive coverage of all debates, rather a look at those debates from the position of the moderator in some of them it is a really good read. It goes into minutia and discussion of specific items/debate formats which you some knowledge of to understand at times what Mr Lehrer is talking about. But I found myself time and again going to youtube and watching clips of the sessions spoken about. It also is wonderful from the point of view of hearing snipits from actual interviews, something which would be lacking on the page itself.
