Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion on the Appalachian Trail resulted in the best seller A Walk in the Woods. Now, we follow him "Down Under" to Australia with this delectably funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance that combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiosity. More from Bill Bryson.

Larry says: "Laugh out loud funny"
"Funny book, shame about the delivery."
    Overall

There are very few authors who can also perform their books as well as an actor could, and unfortunately Bill Bryson isn't one of them. However, even with his rather dull naration, some parts had me shaking with laughter. I can recommend this book, but with reservations.

Adam Cassidy is twenty-six and a low level employee at a high-tech corporation who hates his job. When he manipulates the system to do something nice for a friend, he finds himself charged with a crime. Corporate Security gives him a choice: prison or become a spy in the headquarters of their chief competitor, Trion Systems.

    Karen says: "Clever and interesting."
    "Enjoyable trash."

I really enjoyed this book, despite its habit of repeating itsself on occasion. It kept me happily listening every day in the car as I slogged my way to work and back for about a week. I'll certainly keep my eye out for anything else he has written.

Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Larry Niven's novel, Ringworld, is the winner of the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

    Kennet says: "Genuinely Creative"

I think the review title says it all. Monotonous non-event after non-event made me give up after 6 hours of mind-numbing boredom. Perhaps the last 5 hours were a complete change, but I can't be bothered to find out.

For the three years Shadow spent in prison, all he wanted was to get back to the loving arms of his wife and stay out of trouble for the rest of his life. But days before his release, he learns that his wife has been killed in an accident, and his world becomes a colder place.

Joseph says: "Amazing, powerful book about America."

This is a fantastic book. There wasn't a single moment of it which I would change.
