In 1919, Texas rancher J. Frank Norfleet lost everything he had in a stock market swindle. He did what many other marks did - he went home, borrowed more money from his family, and returned for another round of swindling. Only after he lost that second fortune did he reclaim control of his story. Instead of crawling back home in shame, he vowed to hunt down the five men who had conned him. Through Norfleet's ingenious reverse-swindle, Amy Reading reveals the mechanics behind the scenes of the big con.

What made the experience of listening to The Mark Inside the most enjoyable?

At first, I thought this book to be average. But, like a good song it rambles about your brain until you get it. I felt a need to listen to various chapters again and then the excellence of this book sunk in. This book was really well written with great insight and a lot of very subltle tongue-in-cheek when it was called for. If you read about Ponzi thus book fits in very well.

This is the first full account in nearly half a century of this voyage into history: a tour of the world emerging from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance; a startling anthropological account of tribes, languages, and customs unknown to Europeans; and a chronicle of a desperate grab for commercial and political power.

What did you like best about Over the Edge of the World? What did you like least?

The first circumnavigation in history is worth a listen- just on the merits of what was accomplished and how it was accomplished. The writer absolutely did his due diligence. The story itself is interesting, though not overly so, but that is not necessarily the fault of the writer. It is what it is .But, what I did not enjoy was the narration and I firmly believe a narrator can make a big difference in a story. Unfortunately, the writer, like some others, mistakenly chose to narrate his own book and this took away from the overall performance of this audio book. Thus, if the narrator is abig factor for you, like me, then it may be an issue. Otherwise, start your download.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Laurence Bergreen?

Most professionals narrators in the circuit. Especially, the narrators of Empire of Blue Water and Ponzi.

To those who travel there today, the West Indies are unspoiled paradise islands. Yet that image conceals a turbulent, dramatic, and shocking history. For some 200 years after 1650, the West Indies became the strategic center of the Western world, witnessing one of the greatest power struggles of the age as Europeans made and lost immense fortunes growing and trading in sugar - a commodity so lucrative it became known as "white gold".

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, but the book got a bit drifty at sea (for me) when the book gave too many details on the characters,,rather than a continuous, good, smooth listen. Overall, if you enjoyed

Would you be willing to try another book from Matthew Parker? Why or why not?

    Most likely.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

With every wish there comes a curse. Springsteen 1992

In the summer of 1972, with a presidential crisis stirring in the United States and the cold war at a pivotal point, two men, the Soviet world chess champion Boris Spassky and his American challenger Bobby Fischer, met in the most notorious chess match of all time. Their showdown in Reykjavik, Iceland, held the world spellbound for two months with reports of psychological warfare, ultimatums, political intrigue, cliffhangers, and farce to rival a Marx Brothers film.

I listened to this book after listening to the "Immortal Game" (excellent. and I very much enjoyed it. Very interesting inside look at Soviet era chess and the length they would go to for victory and the devastation sown after a loss. I knew Fischer to be a bit eccentric but not this over the top. Recommended.

Why has one game, alone among the thousands of games invented and played throughout human history, not only survived but thrived within every culture it has touched? What is it about its 32 figurative pieces, moving about its 64 black and white squares according to very simple rules, that has captivated people for nearly 1,500 years? Why has it driven some of its greatest players into paranoia and madness, and yet is hailed as a remarkably powerful intellectual tool?

It was a time when anything seemed possible, instant wealth, glittering fame, fabulous luxury, and for a run of magical weeks in the spring and summer of 1920, Charles Ponzi made it all come true. Promising to double investors' money in three months, the dapper, charming Ponzi raised the "rob Peter to pay Paul" scam to an art form and raked in millions at his office in downtown Boston.

A truly fascinating story that is set up very well by the author in order to have the reader understand the context of how Ponzi could coordinate such a scheme(scam). There is a bit more information than is necessary, like the entire college history of who turns out to be the main antagonist, but it was worth it in the end. This is moxie beyond imagination........

I read the previous review where the writer stated that there were too many what ifs. Well, there are a lot of what ifs in life, but the general theme of this book does not rely on what ifs- it relies on previous cycles and history. The only very questionable cycle is the "terrorist cycle" which only appeared 1992 and 2001. Otherwise, I find the information credible and will prepare with it in mind. Bad news does sell, but bad news also really happens..........

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

There isn't really much more to say that wow. Although, don't buy this book looking for history as in Rome, etc. This is a lesson in biology, geology, chemistry, and oh so much more, with all of the founding fathers illuminated for us in subltly humorous but fascinatingly interesting ways.

You will have to listen more than once and know how to use the go back dial on your player to rehear what you are not certain you really just heard.....
