  • The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality

Space and time form the very fabric of the cosmos. Yet they remain among the most mysterious of concepts. Is space an entity? Why does time have a direction? Could the universe exist without space and time? Can we travel to the past?

Martin says: "Space and Time for the Common Man"
"Great book, but hard to listen to"
    Overall

This author writes wonderful books, but I think it will be hard for most people to get past this narrator. He sounds like he is doing a 1940's newsreel. It is too bad, because the book is very accessable in its text. How and why did they choose this guy to read it? I can't believe he gets paid for this.

  • The Lost Continent: Travels In Small Town America

Hardly anyone ever leaves Des Moines, Iowa. But Bill Bryson did, and after 10 years in England he decided to go home, to a foreign country. In an ageing Chevrolet Chevette, he drove nearly 14,000 miles through 38 states to compile this hilarious and perceptive state-of-the-nation report on small-town America.

Would you try another book from Bill Bryson and/or William Roberts?

Yes. I read all of Bill Bryson's books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Bill.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of William Roberts?

    Bill Bryson

    Any additional comments?

Bill has always done a great job narrating his books. This book suffered for not having him do it. His voice adds so much to the experience. There is a tone to his work that is just difficult for anyone else to pull off. While William Roberts made a good attempt, without Bill giving his unique interpretation of his text, this book came off sounding like a long rant. He complained about just about everything he saw and everyone he met. The narrator did not come off as a likable character. Instead, he just sounded arrogant and snarky. That's too bad, because I can just imagine Bill putting just the right subtle spin on the text to keep it from sounding that way. I hope he will narrate his other books in the future. He is great at it.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

What did you like best about 14? What did you like least?

I loved the characters. They were not typical. I was a little disappointed when it switched from sci fi to fantasy, but that's just me.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

    The underground exploration.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Great voices and great timing.

Did 14 inspire you to do anything?

I did a little research on things mentioned in the book to see if anything matched up with the real world.

    Any additional comments?

I don't know if anyone else has commented on this, but I think the demons are actually a reference to the flying spaghetti monster.

  • A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of My Father

A Wolf at the Table is the story of Augusten's relationship with his father, John Robison, Sr., a man only briefly touched upon in Running With Scissors. Told with shocking honesty and penetrating insight, A Wolf at the Table is more than the companion volume to Running with Scissors - it's a story of stunning psychological cruelty and the redemptive power of hope.

    James Gordon says: "Embarrassingly Bad"
    "Painful but worth it"
    Overall

I have listened to all of his books, and this one is quite different. The narration is a little heavy in the beginning, and I'm sure that will put a lot of people off. As the story of a boy trying to make sense of a crazy life and an unfortunate set of parents, it is extremely powerful. By the end, I was crying and the hair was standing up on my arms. I can tell you that I gave my own son an extra big hug that night! I'm very glad I stuck with it.

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children, unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery.

    "I couldn't put it down"

This was fantastic. It was the kind of book that will keep you in your car or looking for excuses to put on your headphones. I can't ask for more than that. The narrator did a fantastic job as well. I would have liked a more complete conclusion, but that didn't take away from the book at all.

  • World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of 30 million souls, to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

This is possibly the best audiobook I have ever listened to (and I have listened to at least 200 of them). I couldn't put it down, and the only thing I didn't like was the fact that it was abridged. It ended too soon! Don't worry about the political bias that might be there. It wasn't too overpowering.

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

This book has a very unique style that I found very entertaining. I have to give credit tot he narrator, who did a fantastic job bringing all the characters and voices to life. This is definitely a case where the narrator added a great deal to the experience of the book.

I have to add my 2 cents to these reviews. This was the worst thing I have listened to in 8 years with Audible. The narrator was a joke and the stories were lousy. I don't know where those good reviews came from, but I suspect they had underhanded motives as well.

In his newest collection of essays, David Sedaris lifts the corner of ordinary life, revealing the absurdity teeming below its surface. His world is alive with obscure desires and hidden motives, a world where forgiveness is automatic and an argument can be the highest form of love. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is another unforgettable collection from one of the wittiest and most original writers at work today.

The co-creator of the Chicken Soup series, Mark Victor Hansen, and the personal finance author, Robert Allen, have come together in a collaboration that combines inspiration with know-how. Uniquely organized, The One Minute Millionaire combines fiction and nonfiction to show the way to true wealth. Half the book is a fable about a woman faced with a terrible dilemma: Michelle must earn a million dollars in 90 days to keep her family together.

What a load of garbage. There wasn't a single useful piece of information here. It was full of pie in the sky tid bits. I felt like I was listening to a time share sales pitch!
