A Signature Performance: Four-time Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce delivers an air of lovable self-importance in his rendition of the classic social satire that remains as fresh today as the day it was published.

I've always loved the story of Gulliver' Travels, having fallen in love with a movie version as a young child.

But I hadn't read the book in ages. The story is still great, but David Hyde Pierce's narration is nigh perfect. He has a great combination of arrogance, dry sarcasm, and moments of obsequiousness that the story calls for.

He also does an excellent job pronouncing all those made up words. I would've been reduced to giggle fits.

  • Dracula [Audible Edition]

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

    Story

I first read Dracula well over a decade ago, and loved the epistolary nature of it, which made the whole thing seem real and extra creepy.

For the most part, I loved this audio version of it, but there were a few issues I had.

First off is the voice of Lucy. She was too . . . breathy. I guess that's the word I'm looking for. I'm not familiar with this actress/narrator, so I don't know if that's just her voice, or if it was an affectation for the role. She sounded the way an older woman would when trying to sound a few decades younger: breathy and falsettto-ish.

The other problem was the voices given to Van Helsing in other characters' journals (so when Mina is quoting Van Helsing and that actress is doing a "Van Helsing" voice). They didn't have a consistent accent. Tim Curry played the role with a slight accent, the voice of Mina added a heavier Eastern European accent, while the voices of Johnathon and the doctor were yet again different accents. It threw the whole performance off. If not all the narrators were able to do a particular accent they were looking for, then they should have done no accent. The quoting of Quincy had a similar problem, though to a lesser extent. That problem seemed to be more that no one quite knew how to do a old timey Texan accent.

Those were my two main problems with this performance. The voice of Johnathon Harker was excellent, and his given accent for the count was spectacular.
