Alan Rickman's voice... his deep and powerful voice did make me buy this one and I discovered local life in late 19th century and an unknown workman : the reddleman which must have scared many children in thosed days in isolated places.
Great read, tragic moments and a good ending.I recommend it.

Yes everytime. I am the kind of reader that often finds the clue before - and how boring - the end is told. Here no way. It is based on true human feelings too and of infinitely clever minds. I still lick my fingers.... Hope to forget it and be able to relisten to it.

Difficult to say but I liked the journal of her, story of him that converge at the end.

Why not about architecture. But it is all about the unconventional and how being different is ever a problem. A moderne tale about self image, value and belief. Also the way looking at life in reverse i.e. being selfish in order to be generous or generous in order to acquire merit and fame is interesting.

it's not preaching but going on about how important is thinking about God... etc.. Religious beliefs are in my point of view really private and not to be bragged about. Real religious love is leaving anyone the space to believe --- or not. In this case "Lovely" does not add anything to the story. Also the apalling diet they have during the whole story. No fruit, no vegetable nor salad is ever mentioned but countless fries, hamburgers, icecreams, popcorns etc... I think she should look for info at a nutritionist's. And sorry about speaking my mind but two people fall in love and get together in this story and there is never ever a mention about sex nor desire. Is this real??? Is Dee Henderson a nun ?

Nice intrigue but writing heavy at times

It seems more an essay than a story. Relationships between souls but more frequently bodies with crude descriptions. There does not seem to be a backbone throughout the story maybe perhaps sex and poverty. For me no "veni vidi vici" but heard I have....now Makes me wonder if all famous writers are worth catching up with ;-)

About the reading, what can I say? I love the deep voice but the French names and words (the action takes place in Paris) are a clear struggle for Mr. Scott and it spoils some of the pleasure.

I don't expect the narrators to master the foreign words often found in English books but I expefct them like an actor to learn to speak them out so event the native understands.

None a book needs to be unabridged - everytime.

I wish the reader would make some research before tackling this book and if foreign languages are read, at least narrators should master the pronunciation.

I have and for many hours. In fact I could hardly put my headphones down! Not one slave's life but a lineage of them. Great story and great characters. How helpless they were and the women slave condition (inimaginable today... at least in my country) submitted to their owner's whim. Dreadful way of life but would I as a "white" do better now givent the time customs? I hope so!
Again great story from an African snatched from his village to the free grand-grand-grand-parent that still carries some old tales finally researched after more than a hundred years. And after 12 years of research became a book!
Hard and emotionally tough at times but so true to the story. Worth every minute and every cent.

When the helplessness of certain characters, the weirdness of Owen, the sad death of a young woman become qualities on which this intricate and incredibly clever story is based, you can only raise your hat. The suspense with which you wait for the end may well keep you up - like me - for hours...

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle could only be pleased by this work. Or feel a bit threatened even, because Neil Gaiman certainly has it in him to unravel clever clues.

Being an European, it makes this story, told by three very different women, taking place in the sixties and seventies, even more interesting. The South with it's racial divide is scary. Brilliant book. The accents are gorgeous (the readers are really actors more than readers).
