IMHO, this is by far the best Christopher Moore book. It is dark, disturbing, cut and hilarious all at the same time. Surprising twists and turns and some truly classic characters. You gotta check this one out.
You can just see the execs at Harper Collins who gathered in search of the next Hunger Games crafting this one. Kids in peril, broken into sects (ala Harry Potter's Sorting Hat), pitted against each other (Hunger Games). This is very derived, by the book and predictable. Don't bother
I really loved the setup in this novel. The characters are interesting, the mysteries are interesting but the big reveal was a let down. Like a lot of first novels (it happened to me too) the writer gets deep into it and has to work his way out of a corner and can't really do it credibly. Too bad.
The narrator did a great job. Fun to listen to. Good with voices.
If you find this title on sale definitely download it but if you get about 75% in and there's a better book out there, stop listening and you'll think this was awesome.
I had the same experience with Michael Crichton's Sphere.
While not the best of Zahn's Star Wars books it is a good story, strong portrayal and fun listen. The narrator does a nice job with the story and the characters. It's a quick read and worth the time.
The Passage is an ambitious generation-crossing telling of a Zombie planet. I appreciate the ambition and certainly understand why so many love this book but for me, it fails as an audiobook. First of the reader, whom I've listened to before isn't right for a long form like this one. His reading is too tempered and frankly boring. Scenes that cried out for an excited reader were read more like a ho-hum occurrence. As a result the book really drags in parts - to the point that I just stopped listening after a while.
I think this is one of the rare books for which I would have preferred an abridged audio performance. Too bad, really.
If you have wondered how vulnerable the US is to cyber warfare then you want to listen to this book. Lou Diamond Phillips does a great job portraying multiple characters here and delivering a compelling story about China threatening the world in a effort to boost its flagging economy.
Big ups to LD for his Russian pronunciations. Well done, sir.
This is a fantastic performance of a classic novel with lots of passages most who know the movie wouldn't have heard. Anne does a fantastic job of giving vibrant life to the book with unique voices for every character, the right emphasis in the right places and real passion for her reading. A fast and excellent read. Highly recommend this download.
Nearly the entire book takes place in cars during a suspect chase. When you read a Reacher book you want action, smart detective work and interesting characters. This book has none of that and even manages to make Jack himself boring.
The audio performance is also subpar. The reader is a bit dull and his female voices are horrible, I stopped listening at chapter 50. To save myself from falling asleep while running.
Tom Clancy Threat Vector
If you read Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma you don't need to read this one. More of the same. Interesting stuff but I got the point already.
Not enough new ideas
No way. That would be a serious stretch. I guess you could do a documentary.
The premise of this book was really good and I enjoyed getting to know the main characters and the set up but as the book gets closer to the end it becomes clear the author wrote himself into a corner and didn't know how to credibly get out. The main character goes this incredible metamorphosis into a super spy - yeah, right! He manages to escape from impossible-to-escape trap after trap - fully unscathed. Give me a break!
Will definitely read more reviews about his next book before wasting my time
Good narration. Engaging and good voices.
Find another book to listen to.
Wow, this is the first time abridging a book has resulted in it being completely incomprehensible. The reading jumps from scene to scene leaving out details that would have explained why the characters are now in this new location. I could barely make it through the first hour of this one before demanding a refund.
Please replace this one with an unabridged version.
The reader was good and they added some cool sound effects and of course Star Wars theme music. So no fault of the performers.
The opposite. Put scenes back until a comprehensible story emerges. Here's an idea: It's not that long a book. How about putting it all back?
