Abandoned as a child, Tungdil the blacksmith labors contentedly in the Kingdom of Fifthling the only dwarf in a kingdom of men. Its almost good and then we digress and the protagonists make another goofy move...you can even see where its headed. And why do the antagonists have it so easy? Like no one knows this stuff and suddenly or then they get help from...really? I just got annoyed after a while. More so because there is such potential for a great story. This is my last of this series unless I hit the "need a book bad wall" again.

With Miranda's mind broken by forbidden sorcery, Caldan is forced to disobey the most sacrosanct laws of the Protectors if he is to have any chance of healing her. But when one of the emperor's warlocks arrives to take control of him, he begins to suspect his burgeoning powers may be more of a curse than a blessing.

I like the ideas and magic system in these books, but the main character has to be hit in the head with an idea before he takes in to heart....he still hasn't decided to take all the ideas and observations to heart but hey ..just because the 5 other people who were running with scissors just in front of you stabbed themselves doesn't mean you will..so be free run, Forrest run!....I would like this series much more if the main character made choices based on his intelligence level or at least did some thinking, all the smarter characters in these stories make the _(some horrible descriptor)__ choices..just saying.

Ammon's job was simple, to care for the dragon eggs in the Nest. It should have been easy, but it wasn't. When the sun rose after the hatch, he had made an enemy of the most powerful man in the kingdom, and he would soon learn that was the least of his problems!

Story: Basic Boy Meets Dragon and world and grows up.

Review: This is a bit like the Black Cauldron. You expect things to work out and they generally do. I was surprised at the lack of killing in the story, all these fights where they are trying to kill the main character or his dragon friend and no one dies..a little silly that. All in all an engaging story, esp if you aren't a tactics person or too focused on the details.

    Writing:
The story is flow is pretty consistent, there were a few jumps where I felt the editor cut something or it was missing a transition.

But he soon learns the world outside the monastery is a darker place than he ever imagined, and his treasured sorcery has disturbing depths. As a shadowed evil manipulates the unwary and forbidden powers are unleashed, Caldan is plunged into an age-old conflict that brings the world to the edge of destruction.

    Story

This story has some great ideas and neat magic and engaging characters. Some choices the main characters make and some of their drama are just too much sometimes. It is my hope that the third volume (I have already read reviews of the second) can improve and remove some of the silliness. Having said that it is engaging most of the time and not too much of a let down.

Cuz the story could have been great...BUT you can't train characters for 7 years with really mean people and have them fall for obvious tricks every time they train...um Annoying is the only word that addresses this. Same for thinking non part of the group thoughts...its enough time to act like you belong......The story and ideas are great.....but what looks like a Lamborghini is a Ford Taurus...watch the brakes....

This is like someone followed a how to book on writing a fantasy novel. Character does this, insert name here. Its consistent and reminds me of The Goblin Tower. Your hero is the hero for a reason, and he and his friends have suffered. We'll tell you about it ..but the world the book is in always works out and things never go wrong enough for there to be a problem.

I also wanted to like the Airbender movie...I didn't though. This was better and much more cogent than than, but compared to his other works this story was a bit of a disappointment....just not at the level you expect from Brandon. Now if I was writing it....you could cut me some slack...but not so much.

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.
