Hugo and Nebula Award finalist Robin Hobb crafts intricate fantasy tales featuring larger-than-life characters and exotic landscapes. Nevare Burvelle was born to be a soldier in the Gernian army. But as Nevare's career takes off, his worldview alters considerably. Corruption and nepotism reign, and now Nevare questions his own ideals, wondering why he continues fighting for the empire.

    Overall

Not bad, decent character development, great insights into the society she created. Low action. As I was looking for story & action I was half fulfilled. I also felt like the writer wasn't true to the story; so my final reaction was that it was a bit of a lame duck.

Cuz the story could have been great...BUT you can't train characters for 7 years with really mean people and have them fall for obvious tricks every time they train...um Annoying is the only word that addresses this. Same for thinking non part of the group thoughts...its enough time to act like you belong......The story and ideas are great.....but what looks like a Lamborghini is a Ford Taurus...watch the brakes....

This is like someone followed a how to book on writing a fantasy novel. Character does this, insert name here. Its consistent and reminds me of The Goblin Tower. Your hero is the hero for a reason, and he and his friends have suffered. We'll tell you about it ..but the world the book is in always works out and things never go wrong enough for there to be a problem.

I also wanted to like the Airbender movie...I didn't though. This was better and much more cogent than than, but compared to his other works this story was a bit of a disappointment....just not at the level you expect from Brandon. Now if I was writing it....you could cut me some slack...but not so much.

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Wallowing in despair and ever on the verge of madness, he is caught by surprise when a band of strangers breaks him out. But his rescuers don't exactly have his best interests at heart. The magic relic that broke his once-brilliant mind may be the key to stopping worldwide destruction - and whether he lives or dies really doesn't concern them.

This is like an EPIC lite...all the detail seems left off here. Great ideas, fun story but you zip through things that should take more time. There is room for story arcs of this book , but I wish the book had taken the time to cover things that only need a chapter or so. Although complete, it almost felt like some pages were ripped out and you got MOST of the story.
