In a work of extraordinary narrative power, filled with brilliant personalities and vivid scenes of dramatic action, Robert K. Massie, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and Dreadnought, elevates to its proper historical importance the role of sea power in the winning of the Great War.

Though he battled for seven years to marry her, Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn. She has failed to give him a son and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile from the court, Anne stands starkly exposed, the focus of gossip and malice. At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down.

Simon Vance did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. Thomas Cromwell is a very fascinating character in historical works and even more so here in fiction. Henry VIII comes off as a bit distracted and befuddled. I have read many non-fiction works on the Tudor period and Mantel does a pretty good job of staying within the historical context while weaving an intersting tale.
    Very enjoyable listen.

M calls this case a "soft option". He sends Bond to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of the head of the Kingston station. Jamaica is luxurious, and the seductive Honey Rider is beautiful and willing, but they are both part of the empire of Dr. No.

Would you listen to Dr. No again? Why?

Yes. I have read the book and seen the movie many times but it was worth listening too, as well. Easy to follow and nicely told story.

What did you like best about this story?

It provides more insights to character than the movie.

What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?

Good job of providing different voices and nice job of building excitement in key places.

The name Borgia is synonymous with the corruption, nepotism, and greed that were rife in Renaissance Italy. The powerful, voracious Rodrigo Borgia, better known to history as Pope Alexander VI, was the central figure of the dynasty. Two of his seven papal offspring also rose to power and fame. The Borgias were notorious for seizing power, wealth, land, and titles through bribery, marriage, and murder. The story of the family's dramatic rise from its Spanish roots to the highest position in Italian society is an absorbing tale.

Where does The Borgias and Their Enemies rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was a well-researched and interesting portrayal of a fascinating family in Renaissance Italy.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Borgias and Their Enemies?

I enjoyed the insight into the inner workings of the Holy See during the Renaissance.

Have you listened to any of John Telfer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No. Interesting listen.

    Any additional comments?

I have read other books by Hibbert and this was among the best efforts.

  • Absolute Monarchs: A History of the Papacy

With the papacy embattled in recent years, it is essential to have the perspective of one of the world's most accomplished historians. In Absolute Monarchs, John Julius Norwich captures nearly 2,000 years of inspiration and devotion, intrigue and scandal. The men (and maybe one woman) who have held this position of infallible power over millions have ranged from heroes to rogues, admirably wise to utterly decadent.

What did you love best about Absolute Monarchs?

Historically accurate while providing an interesting story.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the Renaissance popes the most of all the stories.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Since there are many popes being covered in the book, it is easy to listen to over several periods of time.

    Any additional comments?

Very true to the author's intent from the foreward.
