It is 1908, and international tensions are mounting as the world plunges toward war. When a brilliant American battleship gun designer dies in a sensational apparent suicide, the man's grief-stricken daughter turns to the legendary Van Dorn Detective Agency to clear her father's name. Van Dorn puts his chief investigator on the case, and Isaac Bell soon realizes that the clues point not to suicide but to murder.

I am not a naval buff or generally interested in naval history, but this story was full of adventure and a good historical look at life at the turn of the 20th century. My husband is a Cussler fan, so I decided to try it. We listened to it together on a long road trip and I was totally absored in the story. If you are interested in fast action, naval vessels, spy tactics, and 'manly men', you will like this story.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

This is probably the best book I have ever read (listened to)! The story is well written with engaging characters and several moral situations that are handled with taste and insight. I enjoyed learning about the Greek struggle when the Ottoman Empire fell in the 1920s and the development of Detroit and it's early racial struggles thru the eyes of the Stephanides family. But most well-written was the story of Calle Stephanides, a young woman who struggles with fitting in at her all girl school until she finds out that she is actually a hermaphrodite because of a rare genetic mutation. The characters are all well defined even when they are not likable.

Two-time Edgar Award-winner Rupert Holmes, author of the critically acclaimed Where the Truth Lies and creator of the Tony Award-winning musical whodunit The Mystery of Edwin Drood, now fuses gripping suspense and evocative music in an innovative novel of intrigue set in 1940, during the very heart of the Big Band era.

    Story

History, mystery, and music combined to make an entertaining story. I was totally unaware of the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair and the man-made island in the bay, so I found that part of the story intriguing. I loved the musical interludes which enhanced the plot and emphasized the 'swing' theme of the story. I enjoyed trying to put all the pieces of the plot together to solve the mystery. It is well worth the listening. Actually, the music alone was well worth the listen, the charming characters made it come to life.

This biography of James Madison reminds us that politics has not changed much in the 200 plus years of our existence. The story reads more like a story than a collection of facts.

Christmas Eve, and the Lee family's reunion is shattered by a deafening crash of furniture and a high-pitched wailing scream. Upstairs, the tyrannical Simeon Lee lies dead in a pool of blood, his throat slashed. When Hercule Poirot offers to assist, he finds an atmosphere not of mourning but of mutual suspicion. It seems everyone had their own reason to hate the old man....

    Story

This was a classic Poirot story with an engaging plot. I did not suspect who the murderer was until Poirot gathered everyone together to unraveled the clues. I had carefully considered the clues and accused the wrong character.

I loved that Hugh Fraser, who played Hastings in several Poirot movies, read the story. He met the demands of each character's personality.

Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release.

What did you love best about The End of the Affair?

The story would seem a bit long and drawn out if it weren't for the melodic reading by Colin Firth. He brought the story to life and made it delightful to listen to.
