Ugh. It had been so long since I'd listened to the first book I'd forgotten about the narration, performed by the author. The storyline is worth a credit but the narration ruins it. I ended up reading the first book and will do same for this book. Long and short the narration is unbelievably bad, let me explain. The authors voice isn't bad but his intonation , you'd think he'd have a grasp on the tale he so creatively thought up...he doesn't.
Here is a good analogy; picture a teenage boy opening a Kermit sweater Christmas morning from sweet & senile grandparents. The teen responds, "wow grandma, I can't believe you remembered I love Kermit (followed by snicker)! That is how the ENTIRE book reads!! No matter if the character is watching parents be murdered or having a conversation with someone threatening to kill him/her. Regardless, the narrator happily and sarcastically reads each line of book with same wholly inappropriate "You killed my daughter!" Could easily be "meatloaf AGAIN mom?"
I'm not kidding, it throws off the world a listener is trying to be immersed in.
I will READ this authors books-he's a good writer but someone needs to tell him his narration is more suitable as a kindergarden teacher during story time (rainbows & sunshine) and horrible for his books.

Ok- right away let me say that any low star or bad review must ONLY of come from impatience!!! No true fantasy lover could give this book less than 4 1/2 starzzz! This book was AWESOME! The first chapters (1-6/7) were admittedly “slow” and I even had begun to think “ugh, ok but boring” as I couldn’t yet really connect to the characters or storyline. However, like other GREAT novels, once the foundation of this book is established...wow! I would compare it to Melissa McPhail’s A Pattern of Shadow & Light series or even Brandon Sanderson’s Various series... (all of which are worth every moment)
This is not the typical coming of age fantasy although it has the goods that matter; sorcery & magic, war, gods, good vs evil all set in a medieval type world with dwarves, knights, & lords as well.
The main character is Alistar, a knight whose given up fighting for a selfish Baron. Like the other territories with overlords, the Brain hopes to continue fighting (a never ending war) hopes to become king (as do his opponents). Without thought to the lives wasted and/or used to accomplish these goals. Well, Alistar has had enough and leaves. His journey had no destination until he started recognizing “the regular folk” suffering, and for reasons he doesn’t understand himself, he begins helping and fighting for the little people (for lack of a better term & not to give away whole plot). He is rewarded for this by a goddess and I will say no more for spoiling the storyline! This is a GREAT listen and I Am downloading the 2nd book as I type this lol. I’m always looking for great listens in the fantasy genre so please send me your recommendations! I listed a couple of my own above and will add authors Anthony Ryan (both his series), David Hair (mageborn series ROCKS), Jim Butcher Codex Alera & Cinder spyres series. Ooh also The daughter of the forest series, and author Brent Weeks are incredible, along with Wheel of Time by the late great master Robert Jordan! A shoutout to what was my 1st & favorite foray into the
SCI-FI fantasy genre; that is Dan Simmons Olympos & Illium!

The world is falling to the burning shadow of the Possessed and only the power of a battle mage can save it. But the ancient bond with dragonkind is failing. Of those that answer a summoning too many are black. Black dragons are the enemy of humankind. Black dragons are mad. Falco Dante is a weakling in a world of warriors, but worse than this, he is the son of a madman. Driven by grief, Falco makes a decision that will drive him to the brink of despair. As he tries to come to terms with his actions Falco follows his friends to the Academy of War.

Finally a fantasy credit I couldn’t stop listening too! It’s a rare occasion, but one I’m happy to share on this review !

Well written in that the characters have depth, relatable and transports you to the world you are reading about. Combat scenes intense as are the combatants. Magic plays a huge part as does the development of many characters & their skills and helloooo ... dragons! Kinda coming of age, but not juvenile in the way YA stuff is, def not kid stuff!. If you like Mitchell Hogan’s “Crucible it Souls” series or even “Dawn of Wonder,” those are two Listens similar in the way of protagonists age, journey discovery, fantasy world and their place in it. Loved both & loved this one!

I’ve got over 500 Listens (favorites in fantasy genre) and mainly snoop around looking for a good listen while waiting for my favorite epics to launch next book (Michael j Sullivan, Brian Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, Melissa mcphail, Mitchell Hogan, David hair, Anthony Ryan, too name a few)
I like to include authors relatable to story I finish so that whomever reads this can have something to download.
I’m always looking for golden credits like the one I used for this book! Feel free to send me some recommendations too!

Ahhhh I’ve waited so long for this book and it did NOT disappoint! The best audio of the year and one of my top three favorite is this series The Stormlight Archives! The worst part is now that it’s finished I’m depressed it will be a long time for the next installment😉 I want more of Kaladin and where his journey takes him next, as well as Yasna and the others, especially Syl.
Any recommendations ...? Currently waiting for next Melissa McPhail and of course Patrick Rothfkuss.

This is the way the world ends. For the last time. A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great, red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal and long-dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Stretched to his limit, Tamas is relying heavily on his few remaining powder mages, including the embittered Taniel, a brilliant marksman who also happens to be his estranged son, and Adamat, a retired police inspector whose loyalty is being tested by blackmail. But when gods are involved.... Now, as attacks batter them from within and without, the credulous are whispering about omens of death and destruction. Just old peasant legends about the gods waking to walk the earth. No modern educated man believes that sort of thing. But they should....

Really enjoyed this novel, I admit it took about a third of the book before I 'got into it.' Point is; I got into it, the world created, interesting concepts of power, intrigue, action, magical application etc. it's a book definitely written by a guy who is more comfortable fully fleshing out the male characters, which is no biggie to me (yes I am a girl) but wished perhaps he would of went deeper there. Great dynamics between the male characters & their friendships, concerns for their families etc. the plot was truly interesting and I download ALOT of various genres with fantasy being my fav. Im always on lookout for new fantasy epics and I believe this is a good first book that hopefully ends in a series I'm crazy about! If u want measure my taste of fantasy my overall top ten include; stormlight archives, the pattern of shadow & light series, Michael j Sullivan Riyria chronicles and a not as well known series that freaking rocked my world last year by author David Hair called
Moontide Quartet!! here is a great great series called by David Hair which way more ppl should know about! Soooo at the end of the first book of powder mage series it stands to break into my top 25 fantasy series- if 2nd book is as good as reviewers say, it lands firmly in top 12 & who knows maybe it will be in my top 10 or 5 or 3 once I finish the series. I'll let u know 🤗

Would you listen to Kingdom Blades again? Why?

Absolutely love this series! So many characters are brought to life in a vivid but sometimes cruel world. Intricate and detailed these books come alive and pull you in even during a 2nd listen and makes for an interesting and fully realized fantasy! Love the pace, nothing feels forced or unintentional about any of the books in this series! Definitely in the top ten of my favorite fantasy series!!

What other book might you compare Kingdom Blades to and why?

David Hair mage series and Brandon Sanderson storm light series are both similar in the development of diverse characters, the rich descriptive worlds and the pace that keeps you engaged and not wanting to leave the fantasy the author creates!!!

Which character – as performed by Nick Podehl – was your favorite?

Hmmm.. Trell is def a favorite however how can The mystery of Tannis be denied? It's a plus there are so many intriguing characters!! From the first lord to the "he who walks the edge of the world" I could go on and on. Major props to Vail too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes, yes and YES!

    Any additional comments?

Can't say how much I love this series! it is one of the most addictive out there! The only negative is you'll be left waiting and wanting more!

    All

Which character – as performed by Tim Gerard Reynolds – was your favorite?

    All

    Any additional comments?

I don't know where to start! This book is right up there with some of my fav fantasy writers. Dawn of wonder does begin as a coming of age novel which is usually the same, tired storyline for youths, however this is far beyond that! Def a series for adults with amazing characters full of colorful depth, simply amazing! You'll get lost in this world. Truly superb writing... I would compare it with maybe Robert Jordan's " wheel of time" series but we'll see if the 2nd book delivers as WOT is a lot to aspire too! Other great fantasy books; circle of reign, name of the wind and for more gritty fantasy try authors Anthony Ryan and David hair (mage series rocks!)

If you could sum up The Legion of Flame in three words, what would they be?

Great second book in this new saga! Discard the few hissy fits over the narration, yes the previous narrator was awesome & it's difficult when they switch to someone different because it changes the pov personality in our mind as listeners. However, this narrator was excellent, he did the novel justice and did not sound "like an old man" as two previous reviewers said (where did they get that?!?). This book expands the world of the first, enters new intrigue and kept me so engrossed I piseed off my husband (can u take those damn headphones off!!!) and missed quite a few phone calls lol😉

What did you like best about this story?

The diff characters and their development, the world building and pace of action!

Which character – as performed by Steve West – was your favorite?

    All of them

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, kept me guessing and interested

    Any additional comments?

I want the third book! Luckily my other two obsession listens are coming out this year; Oathbringer(omg hurry hurry) and second book to Age of Myth this month (age of swords?)

The hype on this book was incredible, so of course I had to get it, lol. It was worth the credit but I wish the author would of dug a little deeper into both the main characters. While not an OMG , nail biting, who done it book, It was a good listen. If this genre is of interest and you really want an audio book which immerses you in suspense & addresses abuse (in all its forms) try the audiobook Pretty Girls, by Karin Slaughter. Now that was one that had me dbl checking my locks at night & jumping when the dog barked.
