This book found the important balance between tragedy and evil on the one side and strength and character to overcome it all on the other side. Sometimes an author can create a story about losing everything without losing oneself. In these stories the characters, while you mourn with them for their loses and for the impact of those loses on their lives, you still experience the resiliency of human spirit to make a life in the wake of it all. This book was so good I bought it for others as a gift.
I loved this book. The story was beautiful. A wonderful girl character who is subjected to so much, but not whiny as so many young girl characters are. She just keeps confronting what the world throws her until she is rescued by her mothers death. The women who come into her life at that moment of need are the archetypal women we all need in our lives. The strong southern aristocratic characters which help her see a that a new future is possible and the powerful southern black women who have survived all and still have their spirit and joy intact. Two kinds of wisdom delivered by a beautiful narration. I loved every moment of listening to this book.
I have listened to lots of Kenyon's books and liked them all. This is nothing but crap. Just long drawn out sadistic writing and lots of whining. Please, Kenyon, you have a bent towards abusing your characters, but this is just too much.
Loved this book. A compelling story that captures all of the human emotions and even some mental illness is a sensitive and authentic way. All the kindness and meanness interacting as they do in real life creates a sense that you are watching a real family come to terms with its history.
This is a book about fear...the fear to be truly seen by others and to let people in. Harold Fry can't trust, can't be with others, can't express himself. There is a little Harold in all of us. The story is beautiful and the performance is lovely and moving. A great listen!
I loved this book! I wasn't sure when I bought it, but it drew me into a life so real, so frightening, and still so beautiful. So many characters who simultaneously depict the best and worst of human beings. The language is enchanting, poetic. The story compelling. The hero so strong and so frail. This is a book of great paradoxes.
New twist on an old theme...kept me listening til it ended. Waiting for the sequel.
After reading the first book by Kearsley,I had to read the second. It was just as good as the first. Loved them both. The characters were great and the story compelling. Real enjoyment. Waiting for the third book. Hoping it comes soon.
The two parallel love stories are beautifully written. The performance is fabulous. The ride through history is interesting. I listened to it three times through.
This was great. Moved fast with lots of interesting characters. The plot was thick enough to make me pay attention. Performance was good, engaging.
