The story is good and fast paced, however the narrator was so horrible I could not finish it. Her reading style was that of someone reading a bed-time story to a child. She sounded as if she were whispering loudly and it was so irritating - like nails on a chalk board. I had to give up the audio and went out and bought the paperback.
Narrators do not usually bother me unless one is switched in the middle of a series. But this one... well... I'll avoid any audio books in the future that list her.
I would, only because I love most all Dean Koontz's other books (exception, I hated the Frankenstein series but attributed that to the fact they were co-written).I really miss the old Koontz... Night Chills, Face of Fear, Twilight Eyes, Mr. Murder and Intensity - just to name a few. I also loved when he shifted gears a little and gave us the Moonlight Bay and Odd Thomas series as well as his recent Innocence (which I hope becomes a series). But The City... I will skip any future stories like this.
It will not be the 2nd half of this book, which I cannot finish. My next listen will probably be a few more Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child or Rizzoli and Ilse by Tess Gerritsen while I wait for the next Pendergast book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
His performance was very good in all the characters. Not his fault that I found the book too slow paced and boring...
I am one of Dean Koontz number one fans and was waiting for the release of the newest book The City. I love his 'At The End Of Your Seat' roller coaster stories, which are just the thing I need to get me going in the morning so I am not falling asleep at the wheel during my 2 hour commute to work.
I understand that Mr. Koontz may want to change his genre from Horror to Drama, but it is not fair to the readers who are expecting a carne asada plate with all the fixings and are served a cheese quesadilla... after paying for and anticipating the steak dinner.
I think Mr. Koontz should write these under a pseudonym so that he loyal fans who expect an exciting thriller are not disappointed and feel ripped off.
I listened to about 1 hour and had to change to something else.
No. I have listened to other spy novels and still love the genre.
Narrator was OK. Storyline was... just... a... snoozefest.
I didn't get through enough of the book to comment.
I recommend this series. I have gotten attached to the characters and enjoy hearing them in each series. My only negative comment is although the narrator is able to capture unique voices for the different main characters in each story, but anyone with an accent tends to sound Russian. This is a bit annoying, when someone with a Hispanic name comes off sounding like they are from Russia.
A different narrator
I am not sure if I will reach the end. The narrator is killing it for me...
The guy narrating this book sounds like a 70 year old retired broadcaster with a voice better suited to television commercials about viagra or scooters. In the sexy scenes I get grossed out. When he changes his voice for other characters he sounds cartoonish. I really had a hard time listening and think I will abandon this one without finishing.
Before you download this book, I highly recommend that you listen to the sample to make sure you will be able to enjoy hearing this.... I would not have downloaded the book if I had done that.
I really liked the narrator in this story.
At first I was wondering where this was going. But slowly it became clearer. I really liked how the story was told from the perspectives of the main characters and I grew to really like these people.
I liked the scene where Maggie chased down the burgler's brother in the park.
I enjoyed hearing the background of Maggie and how loyal she was to her human pack leader in the Marines. I also enjoyed how the author explained things from Maggie's perspective. My heart dropped towards the end when I didn't know if she died or survived for a few minutes... very happy with the ending.
The book was so far fetched and went against the grain of belief. The narrator was not very good either. She had two voices, high excitable and monotone. These two did not blend well with the story. Don, who is dying of cancer, always sounds like a young kid about to go to Disneyland. The mad, sad, introspective dialog all sounded this way. Terrible, no wonder it was free. I could only get through half of the book because it was just that bad.
Need something more exciting.
Another narrator, but the story was so bad it might not have helped.
The whole thing went down hill so fast, I would not have published it at all.
Like all the other stories, I love the way Jack Reacher follows his own code. He risks his career in this one and loses, but he stays on his moral ground and solves a mystery that needed solving and executes the punishment.
This story was OK. I did like the references to the dogs, however the narrator was a little difficult to listen to. She has several voices that she used, but a lisp that is a little like nails on a chalk board. It is an OK listen. I am a big fan of Rizolli and Isles, so it is a pity because the same narrator does that series.
The lisp is a bit annoying to listen to for that many hours.
I love the charactors and the plots. Very simple, easy to follow and I like the moral John with his side kick Danny. I also like the setting in a beach town that has tourist seasons and otherwise a quiet small town atmosphere.
Definately. If you like murder mystery but do not like all the gore of some of the crime stories out there. These stories would be appropriate for even a younger audiance (teens) who like mysteries.
This narrator is AWSOME! So many voices, he is easy to follow when he changes charactors - a lot of diversity without any fake sounding (cartoon-like) voices.
About 1/2 way through the book, when they introduced Duncan, I was totally bored out of my wits and wondered why I downloaded this story... so I went back to Audible and read the reviews. Most listeners liked the book and I read about the ending so I decided to stick it out. The book was OK, but a real snore. I was happy that Jade got her revenge at the end, but it was a long and boring trip for the listener to get there...
Narrator was good. No complaints.
I like action and thriller or detective stories. This book was more of a romance novel - close to a harlequin type story. Not my cup of tea...
